Description The Blue Bomber has finally joined the Brawl! He comes with a full arsenal of weapons and gadgets, as well as his helpful canine companion, Rush.

Along with the Mega Buster, Mega Man brings many different techniques to the game. He is sure to offer variety!

----------------

NAME: Mega Man
FIRST APPEARANCE: Mega Man (Nintendo Entertainment System, 1987)
SERIES: Mega Man
LOGO: Mega Man's helmet

----------------

Well, now we're getting into the odder character selections! I'm pretty much out of ideas for first-party newcomers (other ideas I just didn't get around to creating), so we're going into the third-party newcomers now.

Mega Man is an excellent choice for a newcomer, and he's one of my two third-party choices for Brawl's remaining third-party slot. The other one will appear in my next Profile. Some of you might already know who it is, so those of you that know, please don't spoil it for anyone.

Anyway, let's get on with Mega Man's moveset!

The only good choice for a Standard Special Move, the Mega Buster is a basic chargeable projectile. Instead of working like the standard charge move (Tap B to charge, tap B again to fire), I made it more traditional, like Mega Man's Mega Buster in his games (Hold B to charge, release to fire). And, of course, Mega Man could move around while charging.

In all honesty, they should have added the option of either Tap Charging or Hold Charging in the Controls update , letting players choose between the two. I find Tap Charging to be rather clumsy, and I'd rather Hold Charge to use Samus's Charge Shot or DK's Giant Punch. Of course, this works both ways, as other players might rather Tap Charge to use Ike's Eruption or King Dedede's Jet Hammer.

Like I've said in the picture, Rush Coil summons Rush to appear and act as a springboard, launching Mega Man to recovery. This is like Sonic's Spring Jump, and can be used by other players if their timing is good.

The Mega Ball is an item-summoning move, giving Mega Man a Mega Ball to use. It deals a moderate amount of damage, and has nice knockback; a fairly even-handed move. The trick is that the Mega Ball gets amazing distance if Mega Man kicks it, along with the ability to ricochet off of walls! Only Mega Man can kick it, though, by pressing Down-B again. The Mega Ball can be thrown and caught by anyone, but only Mega Man can unleash its true potential.

The Weapon Copy is the move which merits the most discussion. Basically, Mega Man could conceiveably work like Kirby, stealing powers from opponents. In the Mega Man games, Mega Man always had to defeat an enemy to get its power, but that wouldn't work in most cases pertaining to Smash Bros. games. Imagine a simple 1-on-1, 1-stock VS match. If Mega Man K.O.'ed his opponent, he would get a weapon, but the match would be over, and he wouldn't be able to use the weapon. Kind of a gyp, right?

Thus, an alteration was needed. When using the Weapon Copy as is, Mega Man dashes forward in a manner similar to Bowser's Koopa Klaw, trying to grab an enemy. If he grabs an enemy, he scans them, copying weapon data. The weapon absorbed isn't a direct copy of an enemy attack, but rather a weapon similar to one of Mega Man's old weapons, but still similar enough to the character copied. As stated in the picture, an example of this would be Mega Man copying Mario, which would give him the Atomic Fire, a chargeable fire-throwing technique quite different from Mario's Fireball.

Kind of a mouthful, there.

The mechanics of the Weapon Copy are much like Kirby's Copying technique. If Mega Man copies an opponent, he steals a power. If one Mega Man (A) copies another Mega Man (B) when Mega Man B doesn't have a Copy Power, Mega Man A retains the Weapon Copy ability. If Mega Man A copies Mega Man B when Mega Man B has a Copy Power, Mega Man A receives the Copy Power, while Mega Man B loses theirs.

Get all that? Go ahead, take a 5-minute break, and, when you feel ready, read the rest of this at your leisure.

Of course, Mario isn't my only Copy Power idea. Here are some more Weapon Copy ideas from characters that already exist.

Samus: since Samus has a Missile that homes in on enemies, I figured that Mega Man could use the Homing Sniper from Mega Man 8 when copying her. Both Samus's and Mega Man's missiles could work the same way.

Ice Climbers: Mega Man has had numerous ice-type weapons over the course of his career. Any one of them could conceivably work, but, for the sake of nostalgia, the Ice Slasher from Mega Man 1 would be best. It would fire an icy bolt forward, possibly freezing whoever it touches.

Pit: since Pit is primarily a bow-wielder, an arrow weapon is only natural. The Super Arrow from Mega Man 5 seems too goofy, so I'd go with the Arrow Shot from Mega Man 8. A normal Buster power-up in that game, the Arrow Shot can fire a single arrow forward to pierce an enemy. When an enemy is hit, the arrow then splits into a stream of arrows that travel in various directions!

Snake: for Snake, something bomb-related is obviously required. I think the Hyper Bomb from Mega Man 1 is a bit too direct, so Mega Man 5's Napalm Bomb is best. It fires a bomb that creates a nicely-sized explosion.

Sensing a pattern here? Obviously, most of these Copy Powers would be projectile-based, but there could be some variations.

Ike: seeing as how Ike has Eruption, a sword-based move that causes a fiery explosion, maybe the Flame Sword from Mega Man 8 would be good. It would work like a normal sword attack, except it would cause opponents to ignite. It might as well be Ike's Copy Power, seeing as how Roy's most likely gone.

Wario: coming up with a Copy Power for Wario was rather difficult, seeing as how Mega Man isn't the type of character to unleash a giant fart cloud. In Mega Man 8, Mega Man can summon Rush to transform into a motorcycle, so the Rush Cycle could be Wario's Copy Power, seeing as how Wario can use a motorcycle. Of course, if Mega Man dismounts the Rush Cycle, it would just dissappear, as the idea of Rush breaking into pieces to be thrown at enemies seems rather morbid to me.

Sonic: I'd go with the Break Dash from the Game Boy version of Mega Man 5. With this, Mega Man can boost forward quickly to strike enemies, much like Sonic.

And, of course, some Copy Powers from a couple of my character ideas.

Alex Roivas: the only thing I could think of would be the classic Thunder Beam from Mega Man 1, since it works sort of like Alex Roivas's Magickal Attack. It could fire forth a beam of electric energy.

Isaac: the Power Stone from Mega Man 5 seems like a good option for Isaac. With this, Mega Man could launch rocks in various directions, sort of like Isaac's Grand Gaia technique.

Mega Man's Final Smash takes a page from Mega Man 7, where he was able to summon Rush to combine and become Super Mega Man. Super Mega Man had the ability to boost with a jet pack, as well as two types of projectiles; normal Buster fire, and the Mega Rocket Fist. The Mega Rocket Fist launches Mega Man's arm to home in on enemies.

Mega Man's Final Smash, the Super Adapter, does just this. He combines with Rush, becoming Super Mega Man. With this, he is able to fly around like Super Sonic, attacking enemies as he goes. He can use the B-button to fire a constant stream of Buster bullets, and he can charge and release the A-button to fire homing Mega Rocket Fists! Two of these fists can be used at once, provided you charge up the move for double the required time. He can also damage people by colliding into them but, unlike Super Sonic, collision damage is minimal, as not to take priority away from the arsenal of fists and bullets.

And, yes, I am aware of Mega Man's "de-confirmation ." I am still willing to retain faith that Mega Man may show up in Brawl, as wholly unlikely as it may seem.

There are other viable, qualified third-party candidates, too, so the news isn't entirely crushing.

Like I said before, the next character update will most likely be my next most-wanted third-party choice, seeing as how I already have the picture drawn and all.

Update: As of today (7/30/09), the text in this profile has been updated with Justified Left alignment, making the text a little cleaner when confined to boxes. Also, some move descriptions have been changed to better fit the new alignment.

Update (6/11/13): LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, WE HAVE CONFIRMATION!

I was honestly surprised by this, and a little glad that some of the ideas I had actually made it to the actual character (mainly that he uses Rush Coil and weapons from the games). Mega Man using weapons from other games is great, but it's probably implemented less clumsily than the ideas I typed in this description (which is a good thing, I think).

I love your idea for Megaman's final smash so much better than what it actually is in SSB4.  I was massively unhappy with 5 forms of Megaman (X, NetNavi, StarForce, etc.) all attacking the opponent(s) for the final smash.  There should only be aspects of Classic series and X series put in the game (but mostly Classic series).  This again proves that you and I have the best ideas for what Megaman should be like in Smash Bros.  His final smash needs to be Super Adaptor!!

This moveset is nice, but the official one seems cooler

I agree. Mine seems really clumsy in retrospect.

Of all the other third-party characters in the gaming industry, Mega Man is as loved as Sonic the Hedgehog and Solid Snake. I've so been thinking of what his moveset would be in Super Smash Bros. 4. Your ideas for his special moves are perfect, however I disagree with the down+B move. That should be reserved for his slide.

The weapon copy would be awesome for him. Seeing that some people would think of it as a rip-off of Kirby's inhale, his weapons would be based off every Robot Master and other special weapons from his games instead of each fighter.

I like a lot of the copy powers that Mega Man can obtain from fighters. I love how you include his more obscure weapons like the MM8 buster power-ups and the weapons of MMV.
Hmm, since this pic was made before MM9 and MM10, I would like to update with what Mega Man should get from Snake: the Commando Bomb from MM10.
I have a few ideas of my own for copy powers:
Scanning Donkey Kong would result in Hard Man's Hard Knuckle.
Pokémon Trainer's Ivysaur and Squirtle would be Plant Man's Plant Shield and Wave Man's Water Wave.
Any of the swordsmen characters would be the Tengu Blade and Triple Blade.
Pikachu would be Plug Man's Plug Ball.
And any of the Star Fox characters could be Gemini Man's Gemini Laser.

I can imagine if Megaman were to copy Fox or Wolf, he'd gain a fire based dashing attack from Fox, and the claws from Wolf.

Oh yeah. I'm sure Megaman would be awesome in Brawl. Especially his futuristic counterpart Megaman X.

I wonder, most of the characters in brawl have voice-acting (ROB and Olimar are the only exceptions I know) so if Megaman was in, who would voice him?

TriforceJ In reply to gbindahouse [2009-05-02 01:31:38 +0000 UTC]

I can only hope that he'd be better cast than he is in his own games. Mega Man games are notorious for bad voice casting.

Ironic...

While I was on GameFAQs, I actually brought up MMs final smash should be the Super Adapter! And someone else said that his DownSmash should be the Mega-Ball!

Great minds think alike!

... Why isn't he in? Q.Q

TriforceJ In reply to Shanna-The-Hedgehog [2008-06-16 04:12:55 +0000 UTC]

It could just be an error in communication or timing.

In an interview with GoNintendo, Keiji Inafune (Mega Man's creator) said that he'd like to have Mega Man in Brawl, but Sakurai hadn't contacted him with that idea yet.

Sakurai never did contact Inafune, so Mega Man wasn't in Brawl.

Whenever next time may be. I heard that Brawl was Sakurai's last Smash Bros. game, but I highly doubt that Nintendo would nix one of their best-selling franchises.

Yeah, but things look grim for Mega Man, seeing as how no deals have been made between Nintendo and Capcom to include Mega Man as a Brawler.

By now it's probably too late.

No, it's just the fact that nobody in either party (neither Keiji Inafune nor Sakurai) negotiated Mega Man's appearance in Brawl, so the possibility was slim to none at best.

Oh, well.

Um, lemme see...Uh, NO, NO, NO AND UH, OH YEAH! NO!

Earthworm Jim would be 10x better than a blue, generic Samus clone. I mean, if Snake made it in...

Also, MegaMan hasn't appeared in forever. It's mostly anniversey games in which he appears, and now all we have for today's kiddos is that .EXE crap. If ANY Megaman were to be in, it would be him.

No-Go for MegaMan! Hell Yeah for Earthworm Jim!

Shadoboy In reply to The-Man-Of-Tomorrow [2008-01-11 06:32:36 +0000 UTC]

Oh yeah, Megaman sucks!

All sarcasm aside, sorry, but Megaman has a lot more chance and is more deserving for a place in Brawl than Earthworm Jim. Starting with the fact that he has been in more Nintendo games than EWJ.

Snake made it in!: Snake's first game was on the NES. Just like MegaMan's.

MegaMan hasn't appeared in forever!: Pit has been missing for even more than him. Yet he was one of the first ones confirmed.

And anyone who has played the games knows MegaMan is by no means a Samus clone.

DavCube [2007-12-29 02:07:51 +0000 UTC]

That's pretty good... i did a moveset for him a couple weeks ago, though i wanted to avoid using Rush outside of the final smash (which i used the same idea for) Moreover, i felt it to be kinda silly for him to use his copy function in this game, but that's just me. I just turned it into a thing like Game & Watch's over-B: random sheild weapons (Leaf, Plant, Junk, etc.)

About the de-confirmation though, i sorta agree with you. Inafune isn't exactly the first person Nintendo would contact when it would come to using him. His involvement with the franchise has stagnated and whatnot.

TriforceJ In reply to DavCube [2007-12-29 03:22:57 +0000 UTC]

Well, we'll know when we know. It's only a matter of time.

And Mega Man could be easily altered to have a copy-less moveset.

I know, i know. I was just saying the copy thing was something i'd rather not see. It'd work fine and everything, i wouldn't care if he DID have it.
