Description Rhinolophus affinis or also known as Intermediate Horseshoe Bat, is a species of microbat that is found throughout India, Southern and Central China, and also Southeast Asia. This species of bat is a member of Rhinolophidae group. Although also reffered as "microbat" due to its small size, the term microbat was found to be paraphyletic as more genetic research split the "microbat" group into many families, one of them is Rhinolophidae. Like all microbat, this bat is capable of laryngeal echolocation, where the bat emits sound from its larynx and helped by its tongue click to emit ultrasonic soundwaves to navigate in darkness. this bat is insectivorous, primarily eating insects like moths, mosquitos, and flies. This bat has been suspected to be the first source of the ancestral coronavirus that was found in pangolins that was closely related to SARS-CoV-2 virus or also known as COVID 19. Human exposure of the bats foraging habitat and poaching of animals that shared their habitat with these bats are the reason why this deadly disease emerged in the first place.
