Description My followers shouldn't be unfamiliar with this critter.  They still don't have a 'real' name, even after all these years, but I figured out that they sort of share some characteristics with opossums, hence the temporary name.  I couldn't resist submitting them for this challenge.

I honestly don't know if they would be 'perfect' pets.  With their dexterous front paws, I think they could be very helpful if trained right, but I also imagine they could get into a lot of trouble!

I really loved this! It took me a while to find the original artist, but I used this as a picture in my fantasy rp server Aezanous as a dogish creature! It was killing me not to know the artist of this adorable little critter! <3

Love this critter! Had alot of fun drawing Maud a while back, really lovely mix of rodent/dog, can definitely see the Opossum in there! Lovely anatomy and they look like amazing pets!

Don't mean to sound like the mean person here.

But this look's an awful lot (and I mean exactly like minus the horns) Pallanoph's creatures.  pallanoph.deviantart.com

I'm familiar with pallanoph 's work, and think it's amazing, but I honestly don't see similarities other than they are both quadrupedal mammalian creatures.  Look a little closer and you'll see just about everything is different.  Feet, ears, fur length, tails, facial/body structure, size, etc.  I've been sketching these guys for years and didn't think "Wow, I'm gonna steal a design from someone for a contest."

I'm not saying you stole the idea, I am saying they are very similar.  Sure the size of your creature is slightly smaller along with the ears and what-not.  Just saying it looks a lot like hers.

I appreciate the idea that someone would compare my critters to something as well thought out as pallanophs, but I feel like your first message implied they were TOO similar for it to be a coincidence.

I feel like people are likely to point out similarities between critters that have muzzles without conspicuous nose-pads, or at least I've definitely noticed the trend. But since the undefined nosepad/absence of nosepad is such a popular trait in imagined species here on devArt, I've stopped paying it much mind. Additionally, pallanophs really aren't terribly unique in the first place, but I know when people are sampling me too much!

But yeah. Otherwise, these cute possum critters really don't look like 'nophs. Though strangely enough, pallanoph front paws appear to be heading in this direction.

Imma steal! Just kidding, of course. These little cuties make me smile every time I see them.

Interesting.  The nose did cross my mind as maybe being a bit similar, but even then it's not exactly the same, and like you said, common.  Thanks so much for replying and agreeing that they don't look like 'nophs.  I really want to commission you to draw these guys at some point.  I keep putting it off because I am continuously tweaking their anatomy, so I haven't taken the time to make decent, current reference.

Yeah, folks around here in particular are very caught up in the "special snowflake" uniqueness of critters in question. 'Nophs aren't supposed to be special or unique, they're meant to be functional. I think people get so caught up in things at a glance/superficial details that "everything looks like everything."

I'd love to draw these when you've settled on their appearance! <3

Yeah.  I was thinking about it, and the more inspiration creature artists draw from real life animals, the more similar things can become because we're all working from the same source material.  It's not that people are stealing from each other, we're all stealing from nature, haha.

Looks to be quite the interesting pet!  Love the unique animal combination to create this critter!  What about Dossial?  Or something to cleverly combine the English and Latin names of dogs and possums?  Like Marsupine, marsupial and canine?  Dossum, dog and opossum?  I hope it helps, I'm sure you'll think of something for this critter!

lol.  I just can just imagine having to child proof everything because it could open every container/door/etc.  On the other hand, you could probably teach it to do some more complicated things.

Well trained ones would make fantastic service animals, no?

what about young ones sticking their toes into outlet sockets???

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TruBlueArt In reply to nekonotaishou [2015-02-01 21:57:45 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, that's what I think.  Currently I have them in mind as a sort of multi purpose 'working' animal.  But oh gosh, toes in sockets.  I need to draw some babies getting into trouble.

nekonotaishou In reply to TruBlueArt [2015-02-02 00:04:00 +0000 UTC]

They'd be awesome working animals. How would they fare as search-and-rescue animals? Around how intelligent are they?

Babies, keep your fingers away from electric fans and sockets and construction tools and cutlery and bike parts and everything in the garage... Breeders of these guys must be masters in the art of pet-proofing the house and baby critter wrangling.

TruBlueArt In reply to nekonotaishou [2015-02-02 06:09:12 +0000 UTC]

I've been thinking of them with about the same level of intelligence as a dog.  I think they'd work well as SAR animals.  I should really start nailing down their behavior/senses and stuff like that.

I should work on designing Nakks' parents' home, since they breed these critters.
