I've done a little tutorial a while back just here: it should give you the basic idea. Essentially, you block out your colours first, then imagine what direction the light in your picture is coming from. Choose a slightly darker shade of the base colour for any area that doesn't get hit by light or that's covered/shadowed by something. Areas closer to the light (or reflective surfaces like shiny metal) will be have a slightly lighter shade than your base colour. I hope this helps!

Actually, I can't really place any specific reason apart from because I'd only made a few in the past. I didn't have a lot of plans for them then one night I was just kept awake by ideas so I got them out of my head onto paper. I've a few more coming along soon too
