For the past week, I have been DeviantArt's February Artist in Residence. I had the opportunity to work in their office space, chat with the staff, be part of the DeviantArt podcast, and so much more. It has been an INTENSE week and I've loved every moment of it.
Part of the residency program is to create a piece of artwork that becomes part of a permanent installation in their office. The prompt I was provided was "kindred" and this is the piece I created.
Kindred embodies the idea of home, family, and belonging. My first thought jumped to wolves since the pack represents those same ideas but also because I absolutely love wolves. They represent the wilderness and the mystery of unexplored spaces.
Exploring your imagination is a lot like uncovering the mysteries of the wild. Seeing animals in clouds, imagining creatures in caves, and creating magic where it doesn't exist are the ways that we project our creativity into the world.
Kindred to me is a community and in artwork, the strength of that community is so important. We explore together, lift each other up, inspire, and forge paths.
Let's discover what our imaginations can do - keep creating!
All of my love to DeviantArt for hosting this incredible program. Seeing how dedicated the staff is every day was truly inspiring! Read more about the residency program here:
February Artist-in-Residence: TsaoShinDeviantArt’s Artist-in-Residency program continues in February with @TsaoShin!Each month, an artist from the DeviantArt community will spend a week at DeviantArt headquarters to create a new piece of art. As they create, they’ll share useful information to help other artists in a number of ways, ranging from live Q&A sessions, to podcast episodes about their artistic process, and more. The program started in January, when RJ Palmer (aka @arvalis) visited DeviantArt headquarters for a week and created a stunning work of art based on the theme “kindred.” Through interviews, livestreams, and more, @arvalis was able to share his wisdom with those pursuing a creative field, and there’s still more content to come that we’re excited to share. Our second artist for the Artist-in-Residency program is Eric Proctor (aka @TsaoShin)! In his time as the Fan Art Community Volunteer, his passion and positive attitude have elevated the art form, while his tutorials and resources give back to fellow artists on their own creative journeys. His work, including the popular mashup of Disney scenes with Grumpy Cat, is filled with the same joy. As a longtime deviant and prolific streamer, Eric embodies the spirit of this program.Be sure to watch @TsaoShin this week while he keeps everyone updated on his experience as the February Artist-in-Residence. Start thinking of questions for his Wednesday livestream now, or leave one in the comments of this journal!
The first Artist in Residence was arvalis ! Check out the piece he made!
