Description This past weekend my niece and I got together for a bit of an art jam.  Interested in both writing and art, I read the story she's working on and discussed her characters and designs, and decided my contribution to the weekend would be a group shot of her main cast.  She was very appreciative!

And here they are!  Asha, Kesario, Coran, Shet, Tay, Kasha and Tesa, all property of my niece, HS.  While I certainly adapted them to my style, the basis for most of their appearances, both physically in dress, are initially hers.

It was a fun weekend!  Good times were had by all.

Not sure if it's just that there are a lot of characters in one piece or that they're new and unfamiliar but you can sort of see the difference between them and your usual characters.  Not saying you've done a bad job, quite the opposite really, but with say JET or Cheer! you can tell your a lot more comfortable and familiar with the characters IMO. Either that or maybe it's just that they're all in a sort of meh, unhappy state while your own characters tend to be portrayed in moods and interactions that speak to a story between the people in the picture... oh god I'm rambling and not making sense, THIS MAKES SENSE IN MY HEAD. And not helped by me not at all being sure which of the two it is... ARGH.

The characters here are certainly not presented in quite as lively a manner as the aforementioned JET or Cheer! tends to be.  Characters from both of those are not only more familiar to me, but they're also primarily comedic in nature, making exaggerated expressions and dynamic poses more natural and easy.  In this piece, I tried to go for something more subtle in the way none of the characters are looking at each other.  In addition, while every expression is more or less neutral, they all have different implications or attitudes expressed in pose and facial features.  This worked a lot better when I was just drawing the first row of people... the second row (necessary due to the number of characters) doesn't fit quite as naturally as the rest.

But yes, there's definitely a difference between this and my usual crews... but on the bright side, it's a lot better and more dynamic than my former standard just-standing-there poses!

That's true, and like I said, it's not bad, you can just tell the difference.
Though to be fair It's been a long time since you've done "just standing there" poses IIRC?

Yeah, you remember correctly... some time ago I realized how often I had been doing "just standing there" poses and decided I should stop.  Though I do still use them when doing rough design work or proportion practice!  I just don't post those typically.

Still a magician with the ol' mech-pencil, I see. ^^ I'm liking this a lot. All the characters have distinct and noticeable personalities.

Thanks!  I've attempted to use other pencil types, but in the end my good old 'H' pencils are the ones for me, start to finish!  Not mechanical though... I can't stand it when the lead spins in mechanical pencils, and I've yet to find one that holds the lead tightly enough to prevent that.  Staedtler pencils and a ready sharpener are my tools!  And a nice big sketch pad.

Thank ye!  I was about to say something about the guys here, but yeah... I am significantly better at drawing female characters.  Kesario (middle back) isn't too bad though.
