Persona
Personality:
Curious / Caring / Calm / Gentle
Distant / Unorganised / Melancholic / Easily distracted
Merly is a peaceful soul, even if he was always on the run he would do it with a graceful smile, always trying to help or calm down the ones around him. His curious and caring nature lead to him making lots of friends along the way and never staying nor keeping things for too long, making him a charismatic fella but a very messy one as well. But his lack of experience with meaningful relationships and no emotional support in his youth made him rather distant, always keeping things for himself, unintentionally leaving all of his friendships as superficial kindness, even at the best of his attempts to show that he cares.
Since he leaved Mary's house, he becomed a melancholic creature, always staring at the distance, remembering his days with her.
Strengths & Weaknesses:
Strengths:
- Merly is fast, he can travel long distances without much trouble.
- He really likes to take care of others, and he is good at it. Spending so much time with an old lady teached him a lot about medicine and healthy stuff.
- Merly's body is really flexible and agile. For this reason he keeps sleeping in very uncomfortable places that only he can reach or enter.
Weaknesses:
- He is not a fighter, he will attack when is requiered but his first option is always to run away.
- He might be kind but he isn't the best at comforting people when they are sad, he is more likely to cry with them than be of any help.
- Merly's body is fragile, so he can't carry much stuff not help when fisical strength is required. Though he will give moral support.
Background
Warning: ABANDONMENT, DEATH, NEGLECTION
Merlin was born in the wild, hided from civilization in wide fields far from any human. His family was good at being stealthy, teaching him how to survive by avoiding danger before this even appeared, ‘’Run, no matter what just run, nothing is worth the risk’’ they will always say. Merly could feel their fear, their species had always been in danger even before the zombies started to appear, their fragile bodies weren't made for fighting, just to run, and that’s what they did.
Merlin’s family was small, his mother, his father and one sister. His parents where old and distant, as if they where always waiting for their time to come to an end, that was probably why they didn’t even named their kids, they didn’t wanted to attach themselves just to cry their eventual deads, like Merly’s previous brothers, two tiny puppies who died at birth. His sister wasn’t that different, always doing her thing far from them, and one day she just leaves, tired from the lack of attention.
As soon as he was able to survive by himself, his mother and father disappeared, he never knew why, did they got caught in a hoard? was it a conscious choice?, he was actually surprised of how little he cared about it, but he still waited for a couple of day, until he finally gives up and starts walking away.
Merly traveled alone for months through forests and little empty towns. He was very curious, always observing from the distant and always searching for new friends to make or help, thanks to this he got really good at giving nice first impressions, but he never advanced more than that.
One day while searching for insects around some trees he found himself being followed by infecteds, even if he were a fighter there were still too many of them, so he just runs outside the forest and into a meadow. Eventually he found an old house, it was very rustic but it was completely covered up, he looked around the house trying to find a way to enter since it seemed like a safe place, and found a hole, just big enough for him to enter. Inside there was music, he carefully investigated around until an old woman appeared from the kitchen.
It was Mary.
Mary was an old sad lady, as Merly usually says, always walking around the house cleaning, cooking something for him, or simply resting in her creaky chair besides the window, her eyes were always sad, even while smiling and she would constantly talk to Merly about whatever she happened to remember. The day they met, she smiled softly, and immediately offered her freshly cooked food to him. It was so odd but so kind, that Merly just couldn’t say no.
He stayed there for a long time, it was simply lovely, Mary would always take care of him, pet him, go outside to play with him and even gave him a name, ‘Marlin, it matches with Mary don’t you think?’ it was as if they were a family, and plus there were almost no infecteds around.
But the biggest reason he stayed it was Mary’s sad eyes, and how she would always look as if she was waiting for someone. Everytime she sat down her chair, she would look outside the window and say ‘’they will come back’’ and would spend the night there, it was like looking at himself. He just couldn’t abandon her, he wanted to help.
After sometime Merly noticed that Mary stopped eating, she barely did so before but one day she just stopped, but keep on feeding him. He didn’t knew what to do, so he only started to follow her all day. He could perceive something was going to happen and was getting anxious, Mary was the only family he had, perhaps the only living creature he ever cared for this much.
But certain things are inevitable.
One day, after preparing some food for Merly, Mary just leaved all the left food in the table, were him could reach it, and sat down in her creaky chair. Merly sat on her lap, and stared at her face, ‘’they came back’’ she said, and her sad old eyes closed.
It took a couple of days for him to finally leave but after the food ran out he just had no other option, he left for the same hole he entered. But now he was more lonely than ever, so he started to look for a place to belong to.
After a couple of days of walking he found another creature, one that seemed to need help. His kind nature pushed him to help, accompanying them back to their house just to make sure nothing else would happen to them, and that leaded to him finding the City of Tomorrow, and about FoG. It wasn’t the first time he had encounter groups of animals, but it was the first time they were from so many different species, and the first time he actually felt in so much need for something to call a home. He did his best to impress them, bringing gifts and telling all sort of stories from his travels. He finally convinces them and he joins as a rookie. The happiest day of his life.
