Description A shot of a Pelican cruising low over the waves.... For such large birds they sure are adept fliers.

Really getting a good shot of a pelican in flight is tough where I was.

Thanks so much!

Yeah, makes you wonder. I was lucky to be able to get more or less on top of it from the observation porch.

You know, that's true, but I did have to stand on that obsevation deck for about 3 hours just being ready for the shot. You know, I see all these kickass shots on DA. There's got to be a way to quantify what percent of a shot is, physical effort, patience, planning, and how much is learning the equipment, and how much is dumb luck.

It's a bit easier when you look at one of your paintings. There's no luck to it, really, or at least VERY little, that's just straight talent on your part. When it comes to photography, you have to have an idea of what you want to capture, then go out and be able to take advantage of the opportunity that is presented to you. You also cannot do it again, at least when it comes to nature. If you muff the shot, it's screwed! Like this shot, you can't get it with a point and shoot, and you cannot be "off" on the focus, or aperture.

I don't know why I get into the philosophical stuff with you... I must be boring the crap out of you with this stuff!

You didnt bore me at all - but you see as well, it is all to do with dedication - I have known people - like you - who will go into a hide or some such place and wait and wait and if they got one shot out of a hundred they would be happy - and that in itself is a gift to want and be capable of doing that - I can paint for hours and have the dedication to do that - but to stand or sit somewhere and wait - and wait - well it's not for me, Bob - it takes all kinds, doesnt it - and that's what keeps the world an interesting place x

You may not realize it, but you just described what hunters do as well. I think that's where I learned the ability to be patient with the shooting.

The cool thing about doing that with nature, is that when you sit in nature, and you must stay quite, it causes you to turn your thoughts inward. Much like meditation. Then, you start noticing the things that are going on around you. Birds will perch within 6 or 7 feet of you.

Yes, it does take all kinds, and none are necessarily "bad", just different.

Pelicans are one of my favorite birds. For their size they seem to have the grace of a ballerina
