Description Second-to-last at twenty-two days late past!

Regardless, I can’t think of any better way commemorating this Penultimate piece then with perhaps Cartoon Network’s first true juggernaut series. Premiering on the 18th in 1998 and created by the revered Craig McCracken, The PowerPuff Girls would seem, from a surface level glance, to be a cartoon primarily aimed at a young female audience. Upon watching it however, many have come to find the show both surprise and captivate them through its surprisingly intense action composition and the effortless wit in the writing of its humour. The contrast of cutesy, rounded main characters fighting it out against a rogues gallery of vicious villains lending the series both a charm and an edge that stood it apart from the rest, in time going on to spawn countless merchandise, comics, an anime adaptation and even a theatrical film.

From one female-lead show to another, Hi Hi Puffy Ami Yumi also premiered close to PPG’s anniversary on the 19th in 2004. As alluded to in a previous part when talking about Class of 3000, this was the other one of the two CN originals to be based around real-life musicians. More specifically, we follow the animated counterparts of Japanese pop rock group Puffy AmiYumi as they tour around the world with their greedy manager, Kaz, getting into all sorts of mishaps. A cult classic to this day, the series’ creator actually has actually gone on to serve as the current president of CN Studios, Warner Bros. Animation and Hannah-Barbera Studios Europe since August of 2020.

Capping off the month is the second of the two mini-series under the studio’s belt. Premiering on the 30th in 2015 and created by Sean Szeles, Long Live the Royals follows a fictional British Royal Family caught in the middle of preparations for the annual Yule Hare festival, with much of the series’ humour being derived from both the character interactions and the juxtaposition of a medieval setting against more contemporary elements, as the characters are shown using current day technology and speaking with modern terms and/or analogies. Overtime, this show has sadly come to live in the shadow of CN’s prior mini-series, Over the Garden Wall, as very few people seem to acknowledge it’s existence in the present day.

Though speaking of the present, we only have one more month and four more shows to go through. Make sure to keep an eye out on December 28th for the final part in this series!
