Brilliant work, by the Emperor! Now that's a bodyguard, alright! Built like a brick house!Β

Always found so interesting -and strange!- how these guys ended serving the Byzantine Emperor!

Nice work!

cause they were more trustworthy than bizantine high level warriors, who where all inside those game-of-throne-like backstab plots and power playings Β

(a similar reasoning was made in Venice at a certain point of its history... as all the candidates for city management were alligned to some familiy or party, they simply went "abroad" and asked someone who was stranger and thus out of every suspect, "super partes", and called him the PodestΓ . I know it's another pair of sleeves, but that's to tell how much the byzantinian Basileus trusted his nobles xD. Also everyone knew that the men from the north fought well and were always interested in earning money by rotating their hands with weapons in them...)

...And didn't hesitate the dirty handiwork like civilized people.

Yes, too many books and movies just focus on them raiding Britain, I want to see more about the vikings who traveled east, and the Byzantine empire is seriously underutilized in fiction!

Yeah, well. Now that I have finished the Pagans trilogy, I'm very much entertaining the idea of a comic taking place in Byzantine empire... Something to do with a bunch of Varangians getting mixed up to one of many schemes of the highest levels of power. The outcome would be bloody, believe me

Β One could tell that you did a very fine job evoking these axe-swinging roughnecks because the first thing I thought when beholding this image was "Varangian" even before one saw the actual title!Β
