I actually wonder if the "Shirty" sort of fighter are perhaps a wee bit TOO enthusiastic to be entirely trustworthy in a shield wall; after all the very nature of a Wall makes solid reliability the Chiefest Virtue, making the individual roaring after his opponents raving for Blood and Slaughter something of a liability (given that they will almost certainly leave their mates vulnerable through leaving them uncovered or pulling them along into a charge that may be somewhat mistimed).
Put another way the best place for a Berserker isn't the heart of your shield wall, but rather chewing his way through the guts of your opponents' shield wall! (if only as part of Forlorn Hope assault).

Olaf the holy actually lost the battle of Stiklestad against his revolting subjects when the berserkers he had placed in the first row broke ranks and attacked too early.

Clearly he should have taken a leaf from Shaka Zulu's playbook - he had his more enthusiastic warriors face away from their enemies and sit on their shields until the time had come for them to wreck havoc upon the Opposition!

I love the expression of the guy on the berserker's left. He's more scared of the guy eating his shield than the enemy before him.
