12/20/14 Since Hayami-Gakuen closed down, I've decided that I'm going to put Emil into a new group because he's my favorite character in the whole wide world ;w;/ So Emil is being moved to FreeAfterYear !

Emil would never race against someone if he had an unfair advantage, just as he expects the same from others. Even outside of competition, Emil likes to be fair. He shares everything the same (unless, maybe, it's strawberry flavored), he treats everyone as they should be, and he tries to always refrain from cheating.

Reliable
Emil is a trustable source for most everything. He tries his best to never spout a lie. The only time he lies is when he's doing something that might make him look weak or unmanly (but how could he resist cuddling that adorable bunny?). Otherwise, Emil will stay loyal. If you tell him a secret, he'll keep it. If he's asked about it, he'll keep his mouth shut and tell the truth, "I can't say a word." If you ask him for help on something, he'll try his best to help you.

Friendly
Emil is a rather friendly character. Sometimes he can seem grumpy or awkward. But for the most part, he's a relatively nice person to be around. He may be a little secretive, but he likes people, and he likes to have friends around.

Quiet
Emil has always been a rather quiet guy. Especially since he moved to Japan, he's been particularly untalkative. It's not that he's shy, but just that he's not used to being around so many people. He's also not fluent in Japanese, and fears he may mess up and say something stupid. He truely only talks when he's with one or two other people. If he's overcrowded, he'll get quieter.

Competitive
As many swimmers are, Emil is competitive. He's competitive to a point that sometimes he's rude, which isn't exactly good. However, he never cheats in competition. He likes (and thrives) to be best, but he'll settle for whatever he gets.

Defensive / Touchy
Emil is easily insulted. If someone says something to throw him off immediately off the bat (such as calling him short, or insulting his swim stroke), he generally will dislike that person for weeks to come unless they manage to patch it up. Emil is very self conscious, and takes most everything said to him to heart. The only think he doesn't get touchy about are his freckles, because he loves them too much to care what others think of them.

Awkward
Emil is incredibly awkward. He never knows how to talk about things or say things correctly at the right times. He fidgets a lot, and isn't the greatest at making friends, despite his friendly demeanor. He misunderstands people a lot, and when it comes to him finding out what is really going on, he usually just gets flustered and even more confused. Awkward silences are a normal thing for him.

He spends a lot of his time outside of school and the club back at the Akahana household, which are usually the only people he's completely comfortable around. Cho-san often says he needs to get more friends. Emil doesn't really seek company, though he might strike up a conversation or two. He's not great at keeping communication.

Emil trash talks a lot before a competition, especially if he gets fired up (he'll apologize profusely afterwards, though, even if he wins). He likes to act cocky and tough and manly because it boosts his spirits, even though half the time he's none of these things and it only works against him.

Emil was born along the coast in a small town in Norway. His father, from Ireland, was a businessman. He’d fallen in love with a young woman in Norway, and they’d eloped. Emil was raised mostly by his mother, while his father was often on business trips. Weather in Norway was warm and sunny, and Emil and his mother rarely spent a day inside. Emil, having been a fair-skinned child, always managed to get burned. He was also of Irish descent. And so, by the time he was 10 years old, he had a countless amount of freckles in some of the craziest places. (Butt freckles? Belly freckles? He never really knew how to tell people how he got them “I ran around butt-naked on a beach every day for 5 years”, “Baby, I was born this way”? Nah.) They never went away, despite him finally learning to use sunscreen correctly.

Emil joined his school’s swim team when he turned 10, and was the 5th best swimmer on his team by the age of 12. He was best at Breaststroke, he learned. Despite his high-standing position in the swimming club at school, Emil wasn’t popular. In fact most of the time, he was the school’s verbal punching bag. He was short, his freckles made him cute by girl’s standards - meaning that by boy’s standards, he was an ugly little freckled rat who ate up all the girls’ attention he didn’t deserve. And when he didn't react and flirt back with the girls, he was "gay". His hair was weird. He was four-eyed. Skinny twig of a kid. Emil liked to race, he liked to win races, so he could be praised and forget about all the hateful comments directed at him. He didn’t actually win that often - other schools were better - but at least his teammates liked him.

In the summer of his 13th year, Emil came home to his parents fighting. The first time he’d seen his dad in 3 months - this is what it was like. He snuck away. But he could still hear them talking. His dad was going to Japan for 2 year’s-worth of time...at the least. He didn’t stick around to hear the rest of the fight. All he knew was that, 2 weeks later, his mother confessed to him that they were moving away from Norway, to Japan.

After the move, Emil wasn’t allowed to swim anymore. His dad picked a house in one of the completely land-based, cold Northern cities in Japan. It was torture for the boy and his mother, who had lived and grown for years on a beach in a sunny, warm, small town in Norway. As years passed, Emil slowly forgot how to swim. He had to focus more on studying useful things, rather than the sport he’d always loved. He entered high school as a first year, and by the time he was there, he’d almost forgotten his old life, from 4 years prior.

It was nearing the end of Emil’s first year of high school that he heard of Samezuka Academy - a school for swimming. Emil set to researching the school, and found it to be a prestigious school made for boys like him - boys who wanted to swim. But through his research, he found another school that fit his needs more.

While Samezuka was very well known for it's swimming team, it had a rival known as Iwatobi. And Iwatobi had an outside pool. Oh, and that sounded so, so nice.

Emil begged his mother to take him there, to let him move there. He had to go. Emil’s mother attempted to talk her son out of it, because surely they couldn’t move. But Emil was relentless. His mother finally gave into his begging, and the family had a sit-down talk with both parents present. For the first time in his life, Emil realized he had his dad on his side. Emil’s mother refused to move again because she did not want to be so far away from her husband a second time. Emil’s father told Emil that he would talk to one of his former business partners who happened to live in the vicinity of Iwatobi, and if she agreed, Emil might be able to stay with her while he attended his precious swimming school.

2 months of legal documentations, another extra month of waiting for an acceptance letter from the school, and a lesson of rules on manners later, Emil took a train out to the little place called Iwatobi. Emil quickly learned that stopping swimming for years at a time is bad, and when he tried swimming again in his new home, he found himself to be much less agile than he’d been before, and his breast stroke was sloppy, since his body had gone through so much change since his last competition. After a few weeks in his new home, and frustrating himself to no end trying to relearn how to swim, Emil attempted to use different strokes. Eventually, Emil decided that his Backstroke felt most natural.

Emil is now an official student of his new school and re-learning how to swim like the champ he was as a kid.
