I've been doing some sketches and whatnot to explore some of my mlp headcanons more. Here's a compilation of stuff for Nightmare Moon.
Most of the time, when I do these headcanons, I show the feathers or frills of the head and neck fully extended. It showcases the full extent of it and any markings it may have. But I did a few doodles here with NMM's fins in a more relaxed position. I also wanted to show off the luminescent markings, and the fact that they aren't always lit up. She really only flashes them as a sort of threat display, or when doing magic. Most of the time they're barely visible.
The last thing on the page is my rough sketch for an illustration I'm working on. I'm having some trouble with it at the moment though.

Slender and elegant designs that brings the mind to nighttime, or to the looks of a sinuous dragon, and the butterfly-like wings are amazing.

I really should do some texture studies to go with this. Butterfly seems to be a common thing people are associating with my version of her, but I'm really going more for the "poisonous deep sea fish" direction.

I love the idea of her fins and frills changing their position as her attitude changes, really helps to show that the Alicorns are definitely more than regular ponies...!

The wings have a bat-like framework, with an arm and fingers, but they're a bit more like fish fins in terms texture and construction. The bulk of the wing in a continuous membrane that might even have small scales on it, but at the edges it fades out into lots of thin, semi-stiff rods covered in a translucent skin. I should do some texture studies.
