Description I don't draw Pokemon much (as evidenced by the fact that my Pokemon folder has a grand total of...two drawings, one of them dating back to when Diamond/Pearl was the newest Pokemon game) and I'm not as into Pokemon as I used to be but I do like all the various art challenges that go with them that circle around the Internet. All those species make for prime art meme fodder.

The one I've had my eye on for a while is the Pokedesign challenge , where you hit a random Pokemon generator and try to design three different character designs based on what Pokemon you get, even if you get something like Voltorb.

I got Yamask, the Pokemon species made out of deceased human souls and cries blood because it misses being human. Because Nintendo.

I ended up doing five instead of three partially because the design was so simple, partially because I love the Yamask evolutionary line (and wish we'd finally get a Confagrigus Mega already) and partially because the first three I drew didn't look Yamask-y enough. Not sure if these guys are successful design-wise but they were fun to do.
The one on the top left is sort of inspired by the 1980's Ghostbusters cartoon and how they would render the ghosts in that show, all blobby and wrinkly, often sad-looking things. The rest were "see what sticks".

If I actually wanted to make one of these guys a character, it would definitely have to be the sassy Shiny one. Maybe he's the spirit of someone who maintained an important library that ended up getting burned during a conquest but his spirit has lingered on, and he's more heartbroken by the loss of knowledge than the fact he's dead. Probably has great IVs too.

Ah well, just a sketchy thing that ended up being a lot of fun. Anything to get that poorly drawn Larvitar out of the Pokemon folder thumbnails at least...

Oh my goodness, thank you! It was fun practice especially considering how iconic all the Pokemon designs are.

And you keep on being awesome with your character designs, by the way!

*"My question is how the human turned pokemon creatures like Yamask even handle becoming something that can only make the same noise over and over again...."*

Maybe the noises that it makes are part of the souls that composes the character, or it's repeating the same laments when it was once a few living beings in their death throes before those souls fused into one Pokemon. Maybe it has multiple soul dementia.
Who really knows?

Heck I wonder if it could destroy itself should it ever attempt to psychoanalyze itself, or it just evolves into a stronger Pokemon instead. Forget the battle EXP.

Yeah, I keep forgetting the dark turns that the Pokemon games can take. Even the 1st-3rd gen Pocket Monster games were dark due to Lavender Town / Pokemon Tower. Never mind some of the powersΒ  that the Pokemon had and habits that they engaged in.
I dropped off after the 3rd gen games due to lack of interest in playing the current titles, to which that is sort of a shame because from what I've heard and watched on Youtube, some of characters do have developing personalities as the games progress.

Neat artwork and an interesting character with a creepy behavioral pattern. I kinda wondered if Ghost type Pokemon ever had any emotions in the games. At least I know Yamask does.

I might have to play around with that Pokemon Generator again just to see what kind of hybrids I can come come up with.

Pokemon has pretty much always been creepy, but lately it feels like Game Freak is owning that fact and starting to really up the ante with the newer games. Diamond and Pearl had an organization that pretty much wanted to reshape existence into a new form, X and Y had a doomsday device run on Pokemon souls, and of course the delightful things like the ghost tree monster made out of the souls of dead children.

I still think the creepiest Pokemon has gotten has been the manga adaptations. I remember being a young school child and seeing the rotting Psyduck corpse, the Arbok getting chopping in half, the Eevee physical abuse, and Blaine slowly rotting away from Mewtwo-induced cancer and having that leave hideous mental scars on my psyche.

Well, Pokemon have "natures" that read like personalities, so I imagine the pokemon do have emotions.
My question is how the human turned pokemon creatures like Yamask even handle becoming something that can only make the same noise over and over again....

Ooh, doing Pokemon Hybrids via the Pokemon Generator is a fun little idea. I might have to do that one of these days!

I saw this earlier but forgot to comment! I really adore your stylization of this Pokemon, it makes them a thousand times cuter than how it's drawn in the games XD My favorite part has to be the beaks you gave them and their little wrinkles

I rocked a Cofagrigus named Yorick alongside with Gourry the Vanilluxe in Black 2, they were beautiful with double battles. <3

I favor the Ghostbusters Yamask the most, puffy sad dear with tiny, bony hands. X3
The one in the upper right corner makes me think they died by drowning.

Oh, how I love hearing all the different stories people had training Cofagrigus on this picture. Wasn't really expecting that many people actually trained the mummy-invoking coffin considering it's not a popular Ghost type in the tournaments what with Aegislash and Gengar and Giratina and to a lesser extent Chandelure existing. That makes me happy considering my Black team had a Cofagrigus for a long, long time. (until I replaced him with a Metagross. Metagross are cool)

In terms of Doubles, I remember one of my pairs was a Swampert with Earthquake and either a Flying type or someone with Levitate. That was always fun. I'm not sure if Double battles are even a thing competitively anymore. The last Pokemon game I bought was X and then I just kind of fell out of playing it...

Everyone is loving that Ghostbusters!Yamask and I really kind of do too. I am curious about how all of these guys died, actually. The little tiny one could be illness-related but all the others could be anyone's guess. (or maybe a couple hatched from breeding eggs...how does Yamask breeding even work if they're supposed to be human souls? Oh geez its Cubone and Kangaskhan all over again)

haha, I ran a competitive cofagrigus for a little while before I based a new team off of the more common threats of wifi (aka the same copypaste team of Garchomp, TalonBRAVE BIRD, and Rotom Wash and/or Mega Kangaskhan. Or all legend teams with Mega OPquaza). I named him cole because I cant help but see that stupid toothy grin, has perfect ivs too. He just...burned people and stalled them out by WillOWisp-Hex combo or by setting up trick room. Hes sitting in my competitive box somewhere...

anyway, I really love the shiny yamask and the ghostbusters!Yamask. it just looks like he did something wrong and feels bad

For Cofagrigus (and this was back in B/W competitive play so it wasn't so dominated by Talonflames and Megas), I really wanted to set up a Doubles team that involved a Slaking and a Cofagrigus with Trick Room where the Slaking attacks the Cofagrigus and totally removes its Truant ability and thus becomes an unstoppable sloth of rage, but unfortunately I just find breeding so ridiculously tedious that I just gave up after about 40 eggs with bad IVs. If I wanted to play a monster RPG with grinding, I have quite a few unfinished Dragon Quest Monsters games in my catalog.

Awww, I never noticed Cofagrigus has a Cole-esque grin. What I named Cole was my Gengar.
Cofagrigus was instead named Gibdo after my other favorite Zelda character, the dorky scientist that got infected with the zombie virus in Majora's Mask. Who unfortunately has no first name so thus "Gibdo" instead of something like "Sam" or something...

I think the Ghostbusters!Yamask is still trying to process the fact that he's dead and is having massive difficulty.

thanks to changes in gen 6, breeding for ivs/shinies is loads easier. I think I have a spare, flawless ditto I could lend you for breeding, if you like.

funny thing is, I've had 2 experiences where I was breeding for competitive pokemon, but got a random shiny instead.

first case was with when I was breeding for a goodra on my team and got a shiny 17 eggs in, and a few months back I was just breeding for trick room heavy ball onixs, but got a shiny female with near/flawless stats (21/31/31/31/31/0) for trick room in just β€Ήbβ€Ί four eggs. β€Ή/bβ€Ί

Yeah, i noticed the cofagrigus has a cole grin, and almost cole eyes, too. I usually think if he were a pokemon he'd be either Pikachu, Sableye, or Cofagrigus.

poor ghostbusters yamask doesnt understand

I have Pokemon X, but I ended up suffering Pokemon main game burnout around that time. I remember finding myself loading egg after egg into my party with a Fletchinder with Flame Body and riding around the Lumiose City tower and thinking "well this isn't fun at all" and haven't really played any main title since last year. Still play the side games, though.
Speaking of which, they announced a new Mystery Dungeon game. Here's to hoping it's more like the DS titles and less like the 3DS title...

In terms of Cole pokemon, you have to ask yourself this question: Can the pokemon reasonably wear two hats?

I really want to say Sableye considering the toothy grin, but Pikachu fits his type of magic better so it's a tough decision...

I had a male Cofagrigus named Gibdo in my Black version. He was on my main team through the storyline, but then he got dropped when I caught a Metagross. Sorry, Gibdo...

My dream was to have a shiny female Cofagrigus named Pamela sometime during my Pokemon gaming career but Pokemon breeding, especially if you factor in natures and IVs, is so unnecessarily tedious and boring that I just didn't really try beyond like 10 Yamask eggs.

I never breed, and I'm usually satisfied with the Poke'mon I catch since I don't battle online. Shy Guy one-shot several Elite Four members and Ghetsis' Boufallant, as well as N's Archeops. I like Cofagrigus because he's very defensive, unlike a lot of Ghost Types, so his tankiness lets him take almost anything opponents dish out.

I also had an AWESOME Darmanitan called Zhilo. Frikkin' Superpower and Fire Punch was my weapon of choice.

Turquoisephoenix In reply to DoomsEye [2015-05-22 07:12:42 +0000 UTC]

I breed for egg moves, IVs, good natures, and occasionally hidden abilities. And sometimes I attempt to get shinies. I really made an attempt to get a shiny Yamask because shiny Cofagrigus has one of my favorite shiny designs.
In other words I ended up hatching a LOT of eggs and it sort of contributed to Pokemon burnout. You know what song I don't have Smash 4 3DS play? Lumiose City's theme. I'm sure you can guess why one with a lot of eggs would get sick of that particular music track...

I'm a bit disturbed at how easily I reveal just how big of a Pokenerd I was (am?) by the way. Ahem...

In terms of my Black/White run, I really loved using Krookodile. Not so much Serperior but then again it was a real Greninja situation where the pokemon becomes a lot more useable with its hidden ability.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

DoomsEye In reply to Turquoisephoenix [2015-05-22 07:37:18 +0000 UTC]

Oh, Krookodile was my main sweeper, and Serperior was my preferred starter actually. In terms of competitive ability, none of the Gen 5 starters were any great shakes without their hidden ability.

My other two were Golurk and a Sawk I found in White, which is kinda nuts, since they're super rare in White. I gotta get on White 2, but Omega Ruby has my attention...along with Majora's Mask 3D.
