Description Full title: "Enjolras guidant les miserables" or, "Enjolras Leading the Wretched"
Yeah, a take on Eugene Delacroix's "La liberte guidant le peuple" ([link] ).

My (late) Barricade Day picture.
I was 75% finished with this when I discovered that both spirit-lily and EntirelyInsane had made pieces featuring Enjolras leading the people...great minds think alike!

Slight overpaint (oversketch is more accurate), just to get the layout and some positioning accurate.

Some issues: Enjolras' leg, Javert's night stick, Thenardier's coloring (seriously, he looks like Gollum), Marius' hair blends in with the barricade.

Things I like: the faces, the colors, the epic, epicly epicness of it all.

So, yes, the figures: Javert, Jean Valjean, Enjolras, Gavroche, Thenardier, Marius, Grantaire, and Eponine. Plus the Bishop hidden in the background with a couple of students. I couldn't figure out a place for Cosette or Fantine, as I wanted to include them as well.

Took me ages, probably close to 20 hours.

Please do not use without my permission.
Les Miserables belongs to Victor Hugo

God, I just read that the Boy in the Picture actually canonally IS Gavroche (in the original Version)

Gah, this totally made me think of a les Mis Version. I love it!

I know! Isn't that great?

I've been meaning to redraw this for a couple of years now. Hopefully I'll get around to it soon. Thanks for the comment!

Cool! Have you seen the new film yet? I see from your past comments you hadn't previously... I thought Enjolras was pretty spectacular in it, though! He had such a delightful singing voice and he really seemed to represent the personality he was portraying. They were all magical, in fact. I LOVED it. Just putting out my little recommendation.

I unfortunately missed it in the cinema! I moved back to the States from the UK after it had left the US cinemas and just after it opened in the UK. It's on my to-rent list!

I haven't seen either - I do like the 10th. I'm a bigger fan of the book than anything else.

I LOVE the 25th concert. My favorite musical theater actor plays Enjolras, and Javert's voice is AMAZING.
I liked most of the movie, but their Javert... not so much.

I've seen part of the 25th, and have had many a singalong to the soundtrack. I prefer the 10th though (Philip Quast is such an amazing Javert). Norm Lewis is very good, too.

I love Enjolras' expression. To me it says: "Nice try, monsieur, but I'm not longer taking any of your crap. Your precious Monarchy is dead. Feel free to join the new age.
~ Enjolras"

Oh, I love this! The whole twist on Liberty Leading the People (my 2nd favorite painting in the World) and Les Mis. So many people say that Les Mis is based off of the painting and how that IS Gavroche, and the girl showing her ''hoots'' is a prostitute that the bad painter (Delecoix) threw in there to make it fun. (I have no idea why that is so big <--) ANYWAYS, from one book I read that Victor Hugo might have actually based the character Gavroche after the boy and the woman is more symbolic than a...character. Oh, this is why I don't like school. Do you get my drift? Yes, I acknowledge the fact that this reply is over a month late. Again, you're welcome. I hope this reply wasn't too rude? Forgive me if so. And yes, Notre DAme.

I'm glad you like this!
I had heard that Hugo based Gavroche on that boy--he and Delacroix were acquaintances.

Not rude at all! Thanks for your comment.

thebroadwayparisian In reply to tweedandtea [2011-09-06 07:26:34 +0000 UTC]

I didn't know they were acquaintances. Thanks for the fact. This sounds horrible though because I have actually been to his apartment and based my own bedroom after his... but then again I was extremely tired and I was singing One Day More while fixing my broken headband. Way to go ADD. And again No Problem!

Very, very nice! I think it was well worth the time spent. Javert and Valjean look especially good. I like that you did the whole image, not just pasting people into a file of the existing painting.

Bravo!

tweedandtea In reply to AnneCat [2011-06-11 22:03:32 +0000 UTC]

Thanks so much! A little bit of favoritism on my part--I like drawing Javert and Valjean the most.

I'm really intrigued by using computer art programs to create paintings, so building the whole image was pretty key.

Oh, goodness, I've played around with Delacroix's Liberty so much it's not even funny.
BUT HA, I'M NOT ALONE IN THAT. HA. OTHER PEOPLE SEE THE POTENTIAL, TOO.

So, yes, quite naturally, I'm very happy to see this. It's very nicely done! I'd love to try re-doing the entire painting myself, but I'm always afraid, when embarking on a large project, that some tiny little bit will screw everything up. But this turned out very nicely, so maybe I will!

XD Thanks!

I saw Delacroix's Liberty last week and said, "This MUST be done." And so it was.

You should! I'd love to see a full version of yours.

Delacroix is one of my new artistic muses. I picked up an old Time-Life book about his life and art. Some fantastic works in there--his sketches were amazing.
