Description My first acrylic painting in ages! It's based on a photo from a RSPB Birds magazine. Nightjars are such cute birds, I've never seen a live one but hope to one day. I really enjoyed painting this, it took me quite a while to do but I'm quite pleased with the result

This isn't the best photo of it but hopefully I'll be able to borrow a better camera soon and replace it with a prettier version.

Nightjars are -amazing- as is your painting! Out in the Chihuahuan desert, nearly each evening I'm able to spy Common Nighthawks and Lesser Nighthawks [not nightjars, but Caprimulgiformes all the same]... and one evening, there was a real nightjar, a Common Poorwill!

They are such cute birds <3

Thank you! Some quick googling has shown me how nice those birds are, the Common Poorwill is especially cute I was chatting with my father on this subject and he says that apparently I've seen nighthawks in Arizona but I don't remember that I will have to find an excuse to go back to the USA one day!

They are really neat little birds. I think there's Caprimulgiformes outside of the US, like the Frogmouths of Australia.

You're right, in the UK we just get the European nightjar though and they're tricky little birds to spot and sadly quite rare due to loss of habitat

That's exactly how it is with Common Nighthawks in the eastern US, where I'm from. The Nighthawks are pretty much everywhere out in New Mexico, though! :<

I know how you feel, I see all these birds in photos and would love to see them for myself... It's really nice this, you can feel this warmth coming off it, all those details on the wings and plumage, truly wonderful you know. You should be proud of yourself

Thank you for your kind comment I guess the thing to do with a lot of wildlife is to keep your eyes open and hope. I remember the second time ever that I saw a kingfisher it was in a park in the city center. Really didn't expect it!

Oh my God really? I saw a Kingfisher for the FIRST time ever just yesterday! And I wasn't too far from a town either. Wow, you're right, you'll be amazed at what you may find when you just keep your eyes open.

It was beautiful. Flew off before I could get a good shot but it didn't really matter.. KINGFISHER YAY!
