School assignment. In the 4th grade my teacher read us a story called The Butcher's Cat. About some island were the humans had all left leaving cats to inhabit. Some cats took up human professions (thus the title, the butcher's knife and the mice). However when I decided to illustrate this piece, I couldn't find any record of a book by that name. I swear I didn't make this all up.Medium: Ink, Watercolors, Aging and Crakling Varnish.

This picture is really lovely; I love the crackle effect. It makes it look like an old, worn-out book cover from some creepy children's story.

It looks a lot like it might be from "The Mouse Butcher" - Tom the black cat and Diana the pampered purebred with the bow, and face in the background...
I love the stark simplicity of it, coupled with the textural effects. Really works.

Perhaps they changed the title for later/earlier editions? I only know it was one of my absolute favourite books as a kid x3 I think I've still got a very battered copy in my room somewhere.
