Description School assignment. In the 4th grade my teacher read us a story called The Butcher's Cat. About some island were the humans had all left leaving cats to inhabit. Some cats took up human professions (thus the title, the butcher's knife and the mice). However when I decided to illustrate this piece, I couldn't find any record of a book by that name. I swear I didn't make this all up.

Medium: Ink, Watercolors, Aging and Crakling Varnish.

OOOOH MY GOD I am so excited to find this. I loved that book as a kid; randomly found it one day and read it a thousand times.
'The Mouse Butcher'
I absolutely adore it, but it's not very well known. I still have my copy. : )
This picture is really lovely; I love the crackle effect. It makes it look like an old, worn-out book cover from some creepy children's story.

its reminds me a poem of orhan veli kanik.of course its became very acward because of translation but what can we do ?

lets start :

tailed poem
We will never be able to get along, dear, our roads are separated
You are the cat of a liverbutcher, I am an alleycat
Your food is served on a tin plate
Mine in the mouth of a lion.
You dream of love, I of a bone
But it's not easy for you either, mate
No its not so easy
To wave your tail each god damn day!

It looks a lot like it might be from "The Mouse Butcher" - Tom the black cat and Diana the pampered purebred with the bow, and face in the background...

I love the stark simplicity of it, coupled with the textural effects. Really works.

Oh wow. I think you're right. Mouse Butcher, Butcher's Cat- it's similar no? Thanks for the information though.

Perhaps they changed the title for later/earlier editions? I only know it was one of my absolute favourite books as a kid x3 I think I've still got a very battered copy in my room somewhere.
