Joe can be described overall as being a huge sweetheart and generally good at what he does... But beyond that, he's actually kind of dumb. He isn't good at reading into things, and unless you're honest and up-front with him, the point you're trying to get across will sail right over his head. Joe keeps a tiny notebook with him, specifically for the sake of remembering things (despite the fact his cellphone has a notes function) and even then he has a decent chance of forgetting things.
Perhaps tied to his bear side, he's something of a foodie and generally won't pass up the chance to try something new. And as adventurous as he may be, bear instinct might be what causes him to prefer the gamey taste of venison over anything else.
It's also worth noting that during the winter, Joe's behavior goes through something of a shift. While never becoming outright unpleasant he can be a little... Iritable. Often times looking groggy regardless of how much sleep he got the previous night.

All things considered, Joe actually had a pretty normal childhood. He was born the middle child (and only boy) of three children and was a relatively well-behaved kid who got alright grades and loved eating pizza and playing football.
...Until his mother discovered that he was in possession of her family's recessive shapeshifter gene. And though Mrs. Marie Shawnen-Mendez will laugh as she tells the tale now, she will admit "there's a special kind of panic you feel when you go to check on your baby in his crib and find a bear cub."
Even as a child, Joe was pretty sensitive to the pain and suffering of other people, and made the decision to become a nurse when he grew up
Present:
Indieville is a long way from home for Joe, who hails from a state and town down south. He moved in not too long ago, specifically to work at the Indieville hospital.
...and because the cost of living was low and his student debt was pretty high.
But hey, he likes to think his life isn't too bad for a dude living in a cramped apartment.

Misc. Facts:
- While Joe is normally capable of controlling his transformations, they become less voluntary when he's extremely tired or sick. And he'll tell ya, it is not easy to crack open a bottle of cold medicine with bear paws
- He's entirely sentient while in bear form, though he can't speak
- He wears a fluorescent orange tag in one of his ears to avoid being mistaken for an actual bear and shot at
- The only time his transformation is involuntary, is during the full moon. When the moon is full, he'll be stuck in bear form from sundown to sunrise.
- He smacks his head against doorways on a near everyday basis. That's what happens when you're seven feet tall.
