My idea was, the emote suddenly laughs much louder that he expected and is embarrassed. Do you think it could do with some changes to convey that better?

Well, my suggestion is maybe making the laughing part a little bit longer, and maybe the mouth can be a bit bigger; so it can express the laugh clearer.
