Description
History: The Allgemeine-SS, roughly translated to General-SS, was the largest outfit of the Schutzstaffel. It was established in the autumn of 1934 to separate the original SS from the members of the SS-Verfügungstruppe and SS-Totenkopfverbände and was the general political branch of the SS. Until the beginning of the war, the Allgemeine-SS wore the classic black uniform. During the war, most of the active personnel and reserves were called up for military service, especially in the Waffen-SS. The black uniforms were handed in and largely converted into uniforms for the Schutzmannschaft in occupied Eastern Europe. The remaining members of the Allgemeine-SS gradually received more authority within the national defense. Personnel from the Allgemeine-SS with wartime duty wore the field grey uniform but kept the Allgemeine-SS insignia.
