Description

History: Like most German soldiers of his generation, Rundstedt served in the First World War. He retired in 1938 but was called up for service by Adolf Hitler for the invasion of Poland in 1939. During this campaign, Rundstedt was shocked by the conduct of the SS, and demanded an immediate end to the persecution of Jews. However, the protests did not bear fruit. He served in France the following year and during Operation Barbarossa in 1941. After the war, Rundstedt himself stated that he had been very sceptical about the plans to invade the Soviet Union. After quarrelling over military strategy, he was dismissed by Hitler in December 1941, but reinstated as Commander-in-Chief of the West and Commander of Army Group D on 15 March 1942. Together with Field Marshal Erwin Rommel, he inspected the Atlantic Wall in preparation for the expected invasion. Rundstedt's role as Commander-in-Chief in the West was to some extent nominal and symbolic. Others, notably Hitler, determined the real strategy. After the war, Rundstedt was charged with war crimes, but for health reasons he was not tried and was released in 1949. He is widely regarded as a typical representative of the old Prussian officer class: courteous, a man of duty, and a highly skilled strategist. Hitler showed Rundstedt a high level of respect, and his colleagues generally spoke favourably of him even after the war.
