Description So what we've got here is an envisioning of what it might be like if both of the Mario Bros., and not just Luigi, got stuck inside a seriously creepy mansion. It's meant to be sort of a follow-up to Luigi's Mansion, in a way.
I've always been a fan of old-school horror, and when I introduced myself to the Mario Bros. franchise, I had become even more of a fan. So Luigi's Mansion was right down my alley- I honestly think that it's one of the most beautiful games ever, with a deliciously tongue-in-cheek creepy atmosphere that became cozy and snug once you turned on the lights.

Although it's probably easy to tell that the foyer in Lugi's Mansion was the main inspiration, I was also inspired by Disneyland's Haunted Mansion, particularly the purple patterned wallpaper. The carpet actually was inspired by the carpets seen all over PokΓ©mon TCG, which had always fascinated me. The wooden floor is inspired by floors in actual Victorian mansions, such as the Winchester Mystery House.
In many ways I felt that Luigi's Mansion could go one step further on the creepy scale, which is what I try to do here. Hopefully the darkness looming around them gives it that ominous and perhaps dangerous atmosphere I was going for. (Try and spot some of the references and hidden details I put into it!)

How this got colored is an odd story- see, this was actually drawn on lined notebook paper. We always felt it needed color, but the dreaded blue lines would get in the way.
It comes from the same notebooks that most of our Mario doodles have come from, the ones we used for our Japanese language classes (most of which we've forgotten). We actually have all of those scanned, but we don't get around to cleaning them up very often. I really could do better now, since there are some mistakes that I'd be able to avoid- such as the wallpaper pattern- but it was a nice effort that I felt could be enhanced.
There's actually a nifty trick you can do in Photoshop to get rid of the lines of note paper. Under Adjustments > Black & White, you can desaturate the image and adjust how bright a particular color will be. This way you can turn the blue and magenta way up and make the lines disappear- and get rid of stains/yellowing too- leaving the drawing intact.

So basically we printed the cleaned-up scan on some high-quality paper and I colored that instead. It was kind of like a coloring book.

I tried to use several colors I hadn't used before, which I think worked out nicely, although I still used some of my favorites. I'm always very careful about what colors I use, and it took some effort to get the dark, shadowy effect I wanted. Let me tell you, it took a lot of layers to get it this dark. I had to use colors that weren't close to one another in hue, which is the same strategy I used for the colored drawing of Bernardo Lovelock.
The cobwebs weren't actually in the original drawing- that's a detail I added after coloring everything, which I felt was needed to get that abandoned, decrepit look.

The drawing struck me as being rather cinematic, especially with the rectangular shape, so that's why I've got it letterboxed here to make it look sort of like a screenshot. It only took some minor adjustments to make it truly have an aspect ratio of 16:9.

Overall, I'm rather pleased with this one.

Has anyone else heard the story of a completely blue candle flame indicating the presence of a ghost? I think I heard that in a ghost documentary on TV.

This would be a really great concept for a follow up game for Luigi's Mansion! It would be great if it was on the DS with co-op or Wii with optional two player!

Omigosh, I LOVE this! For some odd reason, the texture is what stands out the most to me. It's just SO cool! I also particularly love the details in the wallpaper and the effects around the blue candle! I admit I'm a little biased because I LOVE that game, but I think I'd still love this regardless! I can't believe this started on NOTEBOOK PAPER!!! Thank you SO much for the tip on desaturating... I've really been struggling with that problem on a piece I've been working on that also came from lined paper! Do you think it'll still work on black & white lined paper?

I've never heard the blue candle flame thing. But it sounds cool! The only indication I've ever heard (or thought I'd experienced) was a sudden drop in temperature and an overwhelming, inexplicable feeling of dread or foreboding.

Thanks! I've always liked doing patterns, but it can get tedious.

Black and white lined paper? Well, that depends. If the lines are the exact same color as your pencil- say, a slightly bluish grey- then you would definitely have to erase them manually. If there's a slight difference, you might be able to manage it. I haven't tried the process on a drawing with shading or anything, because I've never done one like that on lined paper- so if that's the case with your drawing, I don't think I could help you.

Do you think you've experienced ghosts? Funny, because I haven't. I believe that ghosts exist in some form or another, because my dad tells me that he heard one of the ghosts on the Queen Mary ship long before he knew about the stories. He didn't expect one to be there, and that's what was different from other ghost encounters I've heard of, and what makes it more convincing to me.

Mmm hmm, they can! You'll notice my drawings NEVER have them, simply because I haven't the patience!

Yeah, it sounds like I'm gonna hafta do it the hard way. Oh, well.

Well, I don't quite understand it. I see animals, never people. I saw my best friend's kitten who died from being handled too roughly, I've seen deer and rabbits run across the highway. I saw my own hamster run through the hamster tube I was holding. They all looked sort of transparent, and the deer and rabbits are sort of blurred and leave faint streaks. I KNOW what I saw, but it doesn't make sense. I like to believe animals go to Heaven...so why am I seeing them here? The only experience I've had with what may be a human spirit/ghost/whatever was, like I said, an overwhelming and inexplicable feeling of dread inside a certain house. It got worse the closer I got to the house, and better the further away I went. It just felt like something horrible had happened or was going to happen. (Nothing ended up happening though, and my mom, who is a realtor, said the house had a boring history of one happy family after another.)

My mom has said that she's felt vibes from places and things. I haven't really felt the same way- I've been to two haunted places: the Queen Mary and Alcatraz, so the closest I've come to experiencing anything supernatural is that none of us wanted to go into the solitary confinement rooms. Too creepy.

I do believe in spirits who work for God, as I've said elsewhere, but I'm not so sure about the souls of mortals trapped on Earth. I'm starting to lean towards the idea that certain types of wood and minerals absorb and record moments of extreme emotion, which is a recent theory. There's nothing in the Bible about being punished by getting stuck here, so that's why I tend to doubt the traditional interpretation of ghosts.
(Of course, that doesn't stop me from writing about ghosts that way...)

I believe that animals go to heaven too. They have souls, don't they? I look into their eyes and see it. They're as innocent as Adam and Eve, so why wouldn't they? And what sort of heaven would heaven be if an animal lover didn't get to interact with a heavenly version of God's greatest creation, which is nature? How happy would I be if I didn't get to meet my four-legged loved ones? That's the way I feel.

Maybe something horrible happened, but your mom wouldn't be able to know about it? I dunno. It seems strange to me that you would feel that way and there was nothing to it. But hey, sometimes fears are inexplicable and unfounded...

YOU'VE BEEN TO ALCATRAZ?! What did you DO?! (Sorry, I couldn't resist! )

To quote ABBA, I believe in angels. Specifically, angels watching over us. My family couldn't possibly doubt, after what happened to my sister. She was about three, and we had a swingset but she wasn't allowed up there without supervision. As I'm sure you know, three-year-olds can vanish like smoke in the blink of an eye, and the next thing my mom knew my sister was on the ground at the foot of the ladder, crying hysterically. When my mom picked her up, she was totally unhurt, just very scared, even though she fell a good four feet and there were grass stains on top of her hood! We firmly believe that this is a miracle, and she must have been caught by an angel.
As far as ghosts go, maybe ghosts aren't really souls, but rather leftover energy. I've heard that theory tossed around a few times. It makes sense to me, as EMFs can create visible energy, and every living thing has one. And why shouldn't you write about ghosts? It's fun - I do it quite a bit! Admittedly, my ghosts all live in alternate world where ghosts are totally feasible (i.e. Dizzy, some of my Redwall characters), but still. IT'S FUN DARN IT.

Of course animals have souls! We both know that. Anyone who's ever been close to an animal knows that! I guess the biggest argument against them is that they don't believe in Jesus (because they can't learn about Him), which is the only way into Heaven. But I have a really hard time believing God would send all His creatures to Hell because they couldn't read! I'm SURE He has something else worked out. And as for our own pets and animal companions being in Heaven, I know I would be devastated if my own Romsca wasn't there waiting for me. And God wants Heaven to be wonderful for us, right? It's the place of no more tears, right?

Maybe. I now wonder if it wasn't something horrible to a human, but to an animal. After I told you about it, I had to go back there at night. I saw the faint image of a big orange tabby cat crossing the yard, and even though it didn't reach a hiding spot it faded and vanished as I watched. This was the first animal spirit I've seen in a long time, and it happened right after the conversation with you. How bizarre is that?!

Yeah, it was a trip to San Francisco... that was very interesting.

Well, angels are in the Bible, so I say that they're real. I'm not entirely certain what they do (I need to read more), but they've gotta be there. I haven't experienced angels either... Maybe I'm just too busy finding God in art, nature, and love to really need it.

God is merciful, so I like to think that any sentient creature who doesn't understand Jesus is given a final chance- they see Him, and can choose whether or not they believe what they see. Animals, being the trusting sort whenever they encounter a gentle person, would (in my opinion) definitely choose Jesus. They wouldn't know WHY, but they would... Of course, some animals, like flies, have no real consciousness or even thought, so I kinda doubt that there's a "plankton heaven".
I would definitely be sad if my cat Koroma wasn't there. I love her very much. Why anyone would think that love is an earthly thing is beyond me...

That is very strange... So maybe. I definitely wouldn't think nothing of a cat that fades away before my eyes...

I think that the general idea of angels has been fluffed up quite a bit, to the point where people don't think of them as being fearsome. But whenever you read about them in the Bible appearing to people, you find that even when their news is good (like, for example, that JESUS HAS BEEN BORN!!! ), humans who see them are instantly paralyzed with fear. So apparently they're terrifying just to look at! (hence my idea for their animal forms in that story I mentioned) As far as your personal experience with angels goes, God talks to people in different ways! I would think it would be a very good thing that you're confident enough in your faith that God doesn't need to use a big flashbang deal to get your attention!

I agree, and I sort of picked up that vibe from C.S. Lewis, too, in The Last Battle. (That'll be most interesting to see what Disney does with that, no?)

I'm sure that angels are very fearsome- Criswell just mentioned to me about this awesome statue we once saw of St. Michael banishing Satan. He's supposed to help defeat the devil, and he's often depicted doing so: archangel
The Bible seems to imply that they're humanoid, and that their sheer beauty is what startles the humans who see them. They're usually depicted that way...

I seem to mostly get hints that God is there for me. Sometimes I've had a real close call and I wonder, "Good grief, did I really deserve all that mercy?" Like when things go really well for me, even when I'm certain that I've done wrong. Is my repentance good enough, then?

Fox has picked up the Narnia series now, actually. I really don't know what they'll do, because C.S. Lewis is deliberately ambigous about Aslan being in fact Jesus (spoiler alert!). I suspect they'll have a reaction shot and then cut to the credits...

I never thought of angels that way...wow. I can't even wrap my mind around the thought of something being so beautiful that it's terrifying...wow.

I've been feeling the same way lately. I keep worrying that I'm going to wear God's patience with me out, even though I KNOW it's impossible, and that I'm not repenting correctly. Am I wording it right? Is "I'm sorry - please forgive me" good enough?

Really? As in Disney sold them the rights or something?
Hopefully they won't tone it down too much. It IS the whole purpose of the book, after all, people! If it offends people, then they don't have to see it.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

tymime In reply to PsychoAngel51402 [2010-11-23 07:45:05 +0000 UTC]

One's repentance is supposed to be enough to be forgiven, but I think it only counts if you're truly sorry and truly want to avoid doing it again. I hear stories about people saying that they're sorry, and going and doing it again because they didn't bother to resist the temptation. I don't think you need to worry about wording it out right- God only cares about how you feel. Sometimes I'll pray without actually saying anything.

Disney only held the distribution rights, I'm told. The same studio as before is actually making it, you see.

Almost no one understands the concept of not seeing or listening to what they don't like... it's like they want to torment themselves!

PsychoAngel51402 In reply to tymime [2010-11-29 19:51:13 +0000 UTC]

Mmmm...I understand. It just feels to me like you should be really formal...I guess because of how pastors pray and the prayers in the Bible...

I see. I think...
It's just not like Disney to give something like that up, is it?

Yeah. I think if more people let stuff go, the world would be considerably better.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

tymime In reply to PsychoAngel51402 [2010-11-30 00:37:19 +0000 UTC]

Formality is something reinforced by official churches, probably for the sake of keeping the congregation's behavior consistent... For instance, The Lord's Prayer isn't necessarily meant to be repeated verbatim, but rather serve as a guideline for one's prayers in general. Now, I don't usually pray that thoroughly, but I do keep in mind what I'm supposed to be doing when asking for forgiveness. Jesus Himself wasn't at all formal, after all... and John the Baptist was especially scruffy!

Well, Prince Caspian didn't do as well as expected, and since Disney wasn't the ones who actually owned the rights, they dropped it for being unprofitable.

You'd think people would deliberately avoid things they don't like, rather than go looking for it and harass those who do like it...

...that's a really good point. I didn't think about it that way. Jesus was a rather casual Person, wasn't He?

Well, Prince Caspian was all added battles and deterred too far from the plot of the book, skipping all the best parts and making it too "action-y". At least, that's my opinion.

tymime In reply to PsychoAngel51402 [2011-01-05 03:40:59 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, in many ways He was. By modern standards, anyway. He doesn't expect you to dress formally or cut your hair or anything- just love one another as He loved us. But if formalized worship keeps one faithful, then by all means that person should stick to it.
