Poor President, tragic family man due to death of his wife, war hero (of sorts), and known as both "Young Hickory of the Granite Hills" (of New Hampshire - his house still stands in Concord, New Hampshire as a museum), and "Handsome Frank". He was a close personal friend to the great novelist Nathaniel Hawthorne (THE SCARLET LETTER, THE HOUSE OF THE SEVEN GABLES, THE MARBLE FAWN, A BLITHESDALE ROMANCE). Also (before their views on slavery drew them apart) was a friend of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow - he knew Hawthorne and Longfellow from his college days at Bowdoin (he is the only President to have attended that University).

I feel sorry for his personal life. He lost his son in a train accident a few weeks after inauguration and become a heavy drinker after that.
