Description Inspired by exploring pirate ships in SL. xD

I'm so addicted to designing clothes and yet, though my career is art-oriented, I have no training in fashion...maybe I should add to my repertoire >_>

....now I really want a cravat with a pirate insignia on it and a skull bikini top >_>....

Alright, I haven’t written a critique in quite a while now so it’s about time that I did! Pirate girl seems plenty of fun to poke at! Hm, where to begin? Her clothes are just as good as anywhere. I seem to follow a pattern whenever I do these critiques.

Outfit

I’ve always been a fan of detailed clothing. A normal shirt, a pair of jeans and some black shoes are nice once and a while but it really doesn’t suck you in as much as a kick arse design with skull boobs on it. Nothing could be cooler. The most attractive feature to me is her shirt. It’s not only the skulls however; it’s the bands and the little cloth at the collar. They each have their own little details whether it be an insignia or texture. The second best part of this design is the cloth on her forehead, along with what’s around it; dangling beads from the side of her face and the bands just flapping in the wind. But while these are my favorite spots, the rest shouldn’t be ignored. There’s plenty of interest throughout this design; nothing is left blank.

I don’t see anything wrong with her outfit, so I’ll move onto the next subject the body itself.

Anatomy

I don’t think there is anything I hate more than anatomy. The slightest bend in a pose can ruin the picture. I think it’s probably one of the hardest things to understand in art. I’m not only talking about humans by the way, animals are killers as well!

I’ll just work down. The head is pretty good, what I like most about it is her hair, and lips. Both of them are semi-realistic. They got the right texture in them and that adds a lot to the picture. I would work a little more on the nose next time you do a picture, but that’s a relatively small nitpick.

Going down to her torso, it’s not that bad. I think the main things you need to work on are her neck all the way down until you meet the shoulders. It looks just a bit too scrawny. You don’t need to add too much more meat to the neck, just a little. The area between the neck and shoulders just looks a bit too stiff to me; it doesn’t look relaxed. Maybe she’s raising her shoulders a bit I can’t really tell. It just doesn’t look as smooth as I would imagine. The last thing I’m going to mention is her breasts. I’m not a woman, but I think they might be a bit too far apart from one another.

The arms look fine. The hands look excellent with one minor exception; the hand resting on her thigh, look at the pinky finger. It doesn’t give as well of a firm look to it as the others, so it looks out of place. It also looks too bent. Same with the ring finger, it looks too bent. Everything else about the hands is very well done.

Her legs look good, as do her feet. The only things you need to work on are the knees and how the legs are bending. Like I said earlier, the slightest bend can ruin a picture. The knee with the holster above it looks a bit too defined. Loosen it up a bit is what I’d say to do! As for her other leg, I really can’t quite tell you what’s wrong or how to fix it in words. I can only suggest looking up a reference for that. Posemaniacs.com is a pretty good website but, photography might be your better friend!

Alright let’s shift gears again, let’s focus now on the background!

Background

In my mind at least, the background is just as important as the foreground. I was very glad to see you gave it some interest, such as the ropes on the floor or the clouds in the sky. I was, however, disappointed to not see any ocean. She’s on a pirate ship; water should be her best friend (And adding a bit of blue in your picture, even if reddened from the sun, would add so much interest!). The rope has a lovely texture, especially those on top of the picture. I really like how they’ve unraveled a bit! I also really like the realistic clouds back there, but maybe a bit too realistic for the rest of the picture. I’m not sure.

Apart from the water, I’d have suggested to add a bit more wood texture into the picture. Show the floor boards and give them separation. Right now it’s looking more like carpet then wood. I would have also given a little more attention to the board she’s putting her foot against. It looks a little flat with that particular, patterned texture.

Shading

Okay, I like the harsh highlights and shadows on both her and the background, but I think it might be a bit overdone. Most of the shadings and highlights look as if you used burn and dodge tools. If you want to become a better artist, above any other comments I’ve given you listen to this next sentence. Don’t use burn and dodge to highlight and shade. These tools are for very specific purposes and can be spotted miles away if used incorrectly. Instead, use your regular brush and pick out brighter (or darker) colors yourself. You’d be surprised as to how much more beauty it’ll add. You understand light sources, now understand the tools.

Overall

Summing up this picture wouldn’t be that hard. The pose is wonderful, the background is good, and the impact you get when looking at the picture constantly hits you. It’s not a bad picture; it’s got everything it needs to be great. With just a few tweaks and some remodeling on the shading it could be breathtaking.

I just want to jot down one more, very important note. You used quite a few art brushes I think. I’m not going to tell you that’s a bad thing, but I think the picture would look much nicer if you hand drew each brush area yourself. Artists realize it when you put out your own effort to design something. They will appreciate it much more than going over it by using stamps. It adds interest. The problem with art brushes is that they tend to look too manmade and don’t match the rest of the picture. So put just a little more love, I’m sure each and every watcher will like the results more.

A picture is worth a thousand words, and I’ve given you just that. I hope you don’t take my words too harshly, I’m only trying to help you improve as an artist. If you would like me to redline your artwork with how I think the anatomy corrections would look, feel free to note me and I’ll gladly do so!

Keep at it!

This is pretty cool looking. Awesome design! Theres lack of a shadow from the character, but who needs one with a design like that. Id like to know how you did the clothes texture and the hair coloring myself. ^_^

There is a shadow, it's just inconsistent with the lighting. xD *still learning*

The clothes texture was a mix of texture brushes and plain old shading and highlighting on photoshop. The hair is done with a base color, a lighter up layer of strand by strand and then the highlights and color tint put in afterward ^_^

I like the hard shadings in it, lot of contrast. You do hair quite beautifully too might I add. I've been working hard on this one picture for a while and I can't seem to get the hair right XD.

Lol, it comes from reading a lot of tutorials and drooling over other people's work xD

Drooling over other people's work accomplishes a lot!

Haha, I've followed 7 tutorials now on how to get realistic hair. I still suck XD. The picture is sapping all of my energy. Dontcha just hate that?

Yeah that's what I've been doing! Just trading jobs as I go. Usually works. Sketches are usually how I stop stressing. All my real projects lately seem to be big!

And judging by your to-do-list your quite busy yourself!
