I'm about to go all paper geeky on you, but you seem like you'd like to know:

Europe (and from my experience, most of the world) use the ISO 216 and 269 paper sizing systems. You can get good info on it at [link]

The US, on the other hand, use a sizing system based on an older standard parent sheet of 17"x44" (according to Wikipedia). This gives 8 sheets of standard US Letter sized paper (8.5"x11", or about 216mm x 279mm).

In ISO 216, A4 is the closest to US Letter at 210mm x 297mm (or about 8.3"x 11.7")

So unless you can find someone that provides you paper in the international standard sizes instead of the US standard sizes, you'll have troubles finding sheets of A4 around here.

The cool thing about the ISO 216 sheet sizes is that each size is half the size of the next size up, while maintaining the same aspect ratio. This property is very useful for a lot of graphic arts related reasons. US Letter lacks this property.

And now you know more than you ever wanted to about paper sizes.

i have the broadest knowledge of paper in the whole state of Nevada now... haha
maybe i'll be watching jeopardy one day and a question about paper will come up and i'll know it
and i'll have self pride

but thank you!
i now understand the whole A2-A4 papersize thing!
i was wondering why i never saw A# anywhere

Your welcome. Sorry I had to go all paper nerd on you. (One learns a few things when working a 2 year stint at a print shop.)
