The story behind this picture represents the most incredible - no, magical - wildlife encounter I have had to date; indeed, probably ever will have. The story will be retold once I have finished writing my travel diary.

For now, though, this is sġħaana - the killer whale. Stories which vastly predate any text written by the world's major religions tell us that the first killer whale, usually referred to as Keet, was carved from the yellow cedar tree and unleashed upon the world in an act of vengeance by a young fisherman - Natsilane - wronged by his brothers. Once Keet had destroyed his brothers, Natsilane released the killer whale to become ruler of the sea under the instruction that it must never again harm a human.
