Admittedly though, it would make for some compelling manga reading and/or anime viewing, if the fanfictions are anything to go by!

I agree, and there are quite a lot of fanfictions about Rin's dissapearance... but the answer to that question is never given (Though Kakashi did mention Rin once when he was dead... does that make her dead too? I don't know it anymore...)

The anime sure seems to hint at it, as she and Obito were the ones who pulled Kakashi out of oblivion after he fell against Pein. Don't know if that counts as canon or not though, as the manga has been rather vague about it!
