Great shot, this has got to be the most alien looking caterpiller I've ever seen.

The colours are soooo fresh and beautiful. Did you catch this moment by chance or were you lying in wait? I'm afraid I have no idea how long it takes a caterpillar to molt.

I happened to catch it by chance. I knew he was ready to molt the day before he did it because he gets zombie-like... stiff and unresponsive. But then, voila... he's born anew. It takes less than an hour for the actual molting. Than several hours to recoup and get ready to eat once again.

Wish I could molt and come out all new...

you must have a lot of short-term pets sitting around your house

i once had over a hundred cecropia caterpillars - had found an adult couple en flagrante when i was about 9, kept them, they laid their eggs, and promptly died. after the eggs hatched, i knew i couldn't take care of them well enough, so set them free beneath a mulberry tree, and was horrified to discover that within an hour, ants had carried off most of them

So bright and vivid colors in all that darkness! Well done, love those details. Did you get a macro lens recently? Maybe I forgot you said so, I've had much to think about...

No new lens, yet. Still working with what I have... just trying to fine tune the way I shoot.

I think you're doing good. The recent macros seems somewhat closer and more detailed. Maybe I haven't seen your shots for a while and just get that initial shock again, but I do think it's an improvement
