I think the notch is part of the mechanism for elevating or depressing the gun for longer or shorter range. I'd guess there really was not all that much difference between naval and land artillery, except the carraige on which the barrel was mounted.

Hole at the back had a role in running the gun forward on shipboard relieving tackle.

I think there no hole as such. I only see the saddle supporting the elevating mechanism, making it a field gun, IMHO.
