For the greater good!

So with the release of the new Farsight Supplement and .pdf material across the internet, thought I'd show off the cover in its entirety! Big shout out to Darius Hinks at Games Workshop for being my AD/producer on this!

The Tau hold a special place in my heart because it speaks to the space commie in me proud asian and admirer of mobile suit wearing space samurai in me. When approached to do this cover, the brief was to try and match the great Raymond Swanland's dynamism, especially with his work on backgrounds. I tried to do it in my own way, bringing a blend of what I'd have liked to see into play to hopefully achieve a similar result without having to try and duplicate his technique. I think its a great intellectual exercise and challenge as an illustrator to stay true to an art brief/established vision of an IP while offering your own personal perspective to it, without recycling too much of others' genius, as they say.

Other bits for my inner fanboy:
-I always wondered about optic camoflauge for the Tau. Given the nature of the stealth-field generator([link] , I imagined it skirting across a bright battlefield and almost appearing like a prism at times because of how many facets the nodes create and as such, how much ambient light overload it might carry over to each other detection/ projection point... and the stealth field computer not being able to keep up with calculating the reflection angles accurately given all the atmospheric phenomena occuring... resulting in chroma shifting, or at least just looking like a poor optical feed at the least. Spazzing all over the place with multiple wavelengths of light travelling about. Again, all this was mainly as an excuse so I can work in some colour to pull out the battlesuits from the background and perhaps offer some 'grittiness' where technology meets battlefield conditions.
-A long time ago I saw by IgnusDei and it left a lasting impression on me . That idea of Farsight's Dawnblade literally facing the rising sun, was awesome! When composing this image that was the first idea that came to mind, but this time with Farsight with his back against the sun, offering a sensible, tactical narrative as well. I did a more graphic side-view of Farsight for readability/dynamism sake, but if I had more time or skill I would have preferred a more frontal shot of him descending upon the Ork hordes.
-Custom drones with winglets on the bottom, kind of a 'baby' remora.
-XV25s unloading at point blank /decloaking and about to plow into a sea of greenskins, in the famous Farsight CQB style. Dunno about you but the ensuing carnage to me seems tactically worth it.

Anyways, I hope the Tau fans amongst you enjoy this tribute to the Bane of Greenskins, Commander Farsight.

I found this & you as the artist while attempting to track down the amazing artwork for GW's Warhammer 40k. First off, absolutely stunning! I was not aware that you have been the primary artist behind so many of the codex & novel covers. You are one of the very, very few individuals who excels at capturing the gritty, violent feel of the 40k universe. I have quite happily shared your gallery around with a number of my gaming club members (all 15+ year player-veterans) and we've all been blown away by the quality of your work and obvious skill you have. Bravo! I look forward to continuing to see your artwork make this universe really come to life.

I am really impressed by the realistic style of your artworks... I don't know how do you made them by when I look your drawing... I was thinking it was a photo taken in battlefront! I really appreciate this one, I just want to know if I can draw it in B&W pencil style, I link you the Farsight I already draw:Β fav.me/d7mrew7
Thanks for your reply

Honoured by the kind words and moreso by the offer to redraw it in pencil please note me wgen you're finished ao i may enjoy it too! Cheers

ps: understanding how to make things seem realisic comes from learning how we 'see' things like materials and light acting in/on/off them .. The 'fundmentals' so to speak. James Gurney an his books and blogs are a great resource for this basic scientific theories that explain how we see the things we do.

You are really welcome and I will take sooooo much time to do it... so it will be very long before I send you a note to tell you when it's finish... Maybe one year ><" depend how much time free I will have to draw...
But your pic' is so beautiful to stay in front without do something

Whoaw... thanks so much for the reference... I really like science so it is necessarly interesting and I will learn a lot about realistic...

Just last question: This is the HD view of your artwork? (because you didn't let the download link) Because to drawing it... if I can have the most precise version of your artwork (I don't give the link to everyone else, you can be sure) it will be easier to draw it

Thanks for your time and your kindness

In your own time, friend

This is as HD as I can reasonably release it (I don't own the rights.. GW does) Its unlikely you will need more detail as ultimately even graphite cannot capture colour and texture the way paint... much less digital pixels can... I would think its more for you to give your interpretation of the image.

Seriously any tau who is manly enough to go into combat with a sword against ORK HARDBOYZ no less deserves the admiration of every tau in their empire, plus maybe a few Gue'vesa worlds.
