Description A combat rescue gone awry. Swamp divers with gonads of steel decide to leap out of their chopper against the Crewchief's orders to try and secure the perimeter and get their retreating buddies back alive. The gunner just squealed and went nuts with the 30mm.

And yes, those are zombies. I have a zombie project brewing with ! Decided to use our muse when I was put on the damned spot during the con, by Stan/Artgerm.

So this was done today for a live demo at the IFS booth @ Singapore Toy and Comic Con, Spent close to 3!!! hours at the laptop, meeting old friends from school now in the industry and talking to ppl while using my pic to paint over, demonstrating how i went about certain bits of the image.

STCC is over, it was an absolute blast, really cant wait for the next one!!- and I've put in another hour into the piece with little details that I couldn't get on the laptop setup at the con.

(other artists that I recall doing demos at our station include in no particular order: Derrick/DCWJ, Skan/Fiduciose, Darren/WraithDT, Kendrick/Kunkka, Chester Ocampo/El Pinoy, Kevin/King Mong, and not forgetting the great Frederick Rambaud(yes thats pronounced RAMBO ppl )

Sweet picture, could we use it? We're making a zombie RPG and need a good picture for the rule book.

about 10 years. I started 'painting' in msPaint actually Its just a matter of doing what you would do on paper, with a mouse or stylus. Pick the colours, and place them on the canvas. Nothing fancy needed.

You can really feel this picture. The chaos and confusion of a sudden drop into the midst of the enemy in a desperate effort to retrieve one's comrades really comes through. It reminds me of some of the stories I heard about similar events in Vietnam during the war there.

I saw this one over at the concept ships blog site. Awesome work, man. I'm really digging the chopper design. It reminds me of a futuristic MI-24. I also think the lighting around the muzzle flash from the chin gun adds a whole new dynamic to the image. It really gives the scene a sense of urgency. Pretty sure this picture will inspire me to do some helicopter art of my own.

I've been trying to wrap my head around the whole 'polished and precise vs. rough and expressive' painting approach for a while now. I still haven't come to a conclusion as to how people react to said styles. Which do you think you prefer? And why? Curious.

Swordfish244 In reply to ukitakumuki [2010-06-10 22:53:31 +0000 UTC]

Well both have their advantages, the polished look is good for much more tame pictures while the rough is good for action, it depends on what you want to convey through the picture. I think a mix of both is best for things like this, gives the feeling of movement (rough) while it still has the clarity for detailed models (polish).

Basically I like the mixture leaning a little towards the rough side.

ukitakumuki In reply to Swordfish244 [2010-06-12 12:47:04 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for the feedback, but that's something I always hear... and I don't think that's all to it.

I believe it's got to be deeper than that, simply because 'stillness' can also be achieved in a dynamic and rough painting; at the same time chaos and frenetic action can also be captured with super sharp imagery, as long as the strokes are placed right. (manga and japanimation is a great example of this).

Perhaps... it just boils down to taste for the most part, like how you put it at the end of your reply... Perhaps. Thanks again!
