ukitakumuki In reply to speedstriker [2010-06-10 18:18:56 +0000 UTC]

Because whiny jedi kids and racist rabbit aliens are what the crowds go for? Times are changing though. It won't be long before someone convinces Lucas that they should just make a 501st movie or something in the likes of the grittiest war dramas of today. I dunno, I'm thinking Band of Brothers meets Stormtroopers meets Generation Kill.

This one's my favorite of your new uploads. It's reminiscent of your oldest works- I mean that in a good way of course. It's loose, but not at all confusing in its depiction, and the brush strokes flow together well without too much smoothing. Salute.

cheers man. And yeah, I had an urge to just go 'oldstyle' with this one. lazy and comfort zone and all.

J-Humphries In reply to ukitakumuki [2009-10-07 17:00:10 +0000 UTC]

It seems you're moving away from that a bit. Any particular reason why? Is it just natural evolution of style based on increased skill, or or you consciously trying to change your look?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ukitakumuki In reply to J-Humphries [2009-10-07 17:20:22 +0000 UTC]

I'd answer A.

I'm consciously trying to be technically better every day, by questioning my approach constantly.

What used to be just 'winging it' doesn't fly with me anymore. I want to be in full control, no happy accidents. So in a way, like you said, it is a natural evolution in terms of look, but a conscious one as well. Less technical mistakes already makes for a pretty different look, one governed by logic and theory and less on guesswork.

That's not to say I won't go back once in a while to revisit 'my roots' if I can call it that.. its just that I'm having so much more fun learning and growing and not having to rely on a certain style to forgive/cover my mistakes. I'm just hardcore that way. Hahaha jk.

What about you though? What do you think about the growth and self improvement aspect in your craft?

J-Humphries In reply to ukitakumuki [2009-10-07 19:19:20 +0000 UTC]

There are times I feel that I should go back to the basics more, and exclusively work with rendering techniques that have been used for hundreds of years. When I started painting, I would used exclusively round, hard edged brushes so that I would learn how to render, without relying on the things like texture brushes and hapless brushstrokes to create those happy accidents. Right now, I'm starting to rely on texture brushes to get a specific look of whatever it is I'm painting, AFTER I've painted with the basic shapes, and lighting scheme, with that classic round brush. I suppose, in time, I should really take more advantage of the digital medium, in terms of the innumerable ways a program like photoshop can tweak the colors. (I really don't want to paint that way though, it seems too artificial to me) I guess I'm slowly moving from a rendering method that is a digital analogue to pastel, with the basic nonlinear editing capacity of photoshop, to a more comprehensive understanding of how the program can adjust most aspects of the image without strict painting. Basically, I'm learning the program, as well as drawing/painting at the same time.

In truth though, my ideal rendering method is the simpelest. I'm sure you know the joy that we painters feel when we see incredibly controlled, yet decicive brushwork that tells everything about the subject with minimal effort. That's what I'm working for in the end. Certainly, I admire highly polished work, shiny work (Andree Wallin is a great example of that) but really, I hope to replicate the technique of Sargent, or better yet, Winslow Homer.

For me though, I think I need to focus on creating polished pieces now, so that I'll have a better conceptualization of detail. I always seem to make better speedpaintings after I get done with a massive time vacuum of a piece.

Out of curiosity, how long have you been at this, painting I mean?

ukitakumuki In reply to J-Humphries [2009-10-08 10:51:14 +0000 UTC]

Yeah I totally get what you mean, I'm enjoying painting on both ends of the 'olish' spectrum, for the exact same reasons you described so well. But personally shiny art has less appeal to me, at least right now.

I've been painting since 2003, and I've only witnessed an obvious growth/'breakthrough' twice. The most recent one actually thanks to my work on the SWGTCG. I also think my mandatory national military service helped with that -a friend described it as being an artistic pressure cooker. The last thing you want to do, or can afford to do is paint when you're home on your weekends. You'd much rather savour the taste of ice cream or remind yourself of how a real pillow feels. Eventually the pent up artistic aggression gets let loose and hopefully you catch it and not lose all 2 years of it.

Apparently taxi drivers suck even MORE in the Star Wars universe.
Love the trooper's pose and the splash effect! But a lot of the piece feels like empty space...maybe if the whole car and everyone on it was shifted a bit more towards the middle it would help.
