Description For the purpose of my portfolio, I've been developing a fantasy world for a hypothetical game- complete with races, classes, environments, lore, and history. Goblins are one of my favorite fantasy races, and this is my take on them.
In my last set of goblin concepts, the ones with bat-like features were by far the most popular, so I've chosen to go with that direction in fleshing out this race a bit further.

The goblins of Orphan (just a working title for the world, until I come up with something good) are cave dwellers. Although their eyesight isn't bad, their hearing is incredible- and they use echolocation to help them navigate the vast underground network of caverns that is their kingdom. Before encountering other races, they communicated through a language of music, and this has shaped much of their culture. The goblins are known to craft incredible instruments with magical qualities- no two of which are alike. They're also known for a particular love of herbs, and many of their instruments double as smoking apparatuses. The goblins mine a type of crystal that has unique resonating properties, which they use to enhance their musical implements, their magic, their weapons, and their wardrobes. They cultivate moths for meat and fur, as well as pets and messengers. Moth wing motifs are common in goblin textiles, tattoos, and art. Spiders are also popular pets, and the goblins have bred a range of them for everything from guard beasts to lap warmers.

I totally understand why these were among people's favourites. Cool concepts - even though I landed here looking for batlike ORCs. You know, more feral and buff, for my own homebrew campaign. ^^

Batlike orcs, you say? I love me some orcs...may have to draw those sometime

Ooooh, if you do, notify me!

I had a flash of inspiration to change the "standard" aesthetic from pig-like to bat-like. Great, floppy ears, needlesharp teeth, nostrils/nose like a vampire bat. And bushy, black manes. Built almost like a silverback. Makes for a more creepy experience than the "same old" look they currently have, in my opinion. Also, they are supposed to be able to see in the dark and what breed of pig does that...?

Glad you like the inspiration, by the way. ^^

These look really nice and clean for sketches, what programs and brushes did you use?

UlaFish In reply to TFfan1 [2018-08-26 20:42:52 +0000 UTC]

You're right, they're probably better classified as "drawings" than sketches. I used Adobe Photoshop and I believe mostly just the basic round brush.

Batnoses are not my thing, but I like their fresh look and I love, what you are done with their culture.
(And I really would ask the freckled one to date.)

I really love that you chose to develop the bat-nose goblins further. I've seen a lot of recycled goblin ideas but this is very fresh and different.

Please do an art book one day, Kindra. Your art is beautiful, charming, ethereal, thoughtful, playful and sassy all at once. Just lovely.

These look incredible - Goblins have very quickly become my favourite fantasy race and I adore how much thought and love you've put into these designs and the cultural aspects; it really shines through. This is definitely something I'd love to see and read more about!

Also my favourite is the old lady goblin near the top with all her cute little pet spiders!

Wow, this is spectacular. Not just the art, but the details in the race! I love bats in general, and using the heightened hearing to lead into music as a means of communication just sent me into giggles of delight!

Finally goblins with some actual culture! I'm so tired of seeing the typical tribal or eccentric engineers themes. I can't wait to see more of this game concept!

As Leyly said, it'd make a great book! Have you considered putting up an ebook on Amazon or similar? Plenty of people have art books filled with concept art like your goblin page there, even I do. I'd buy that! I'm sure plenty of artists would use such stuff as inspiration and reference and whatever else...

I love their bat-noses!! And all the ways you've worked crystals into their attire and armament -- they're amazing!

The chubby spiders are wonderful, too -- you really have a distinctive and wonderful art style!

ME: Very inventive. you wouldn't sue me if I used some feachers from your goblins in some of my goblins would you? Mainly the nose, and only for a certain breed.

TORVUS: Oh, SUE HIS ASS OFF JUST FOR ASKING! Please? It's fun watching him get yelled at by Judy!
