Pamela Lillian Isley was a botanist by trade, studying to become biochemist, but her frustrations with what she saw as humanity's callous disregard of the environment eventually caused her to abandon her former pursuits in favor of eco-terrorism. While she saw it as a noble cause, believing the ends justified the means, her extremist methods and targeting Gotham City's elite quickly turned the tables as she became hunted.

Forced underground with her cell of like-minded cohorts, she helped develop a chemical weapon with which she planned to hold the city hostage. During what she believed would be her finest moment, Isley's compound was attacked by overzealous and corrupt SWAT officers. During the ensuing shootout, Isley was exposed to the bioweapon by one of the SWAT officers and left to die.

Batman's timely intervention saved Isley's life, rescuing her from further contamination and bringing her to the hospital. Isley didn't perish from the bioweapon, instead, it mutated her, turning her skin a pale green, granting her immunity to most poisons, venoms, and toxins, gifting her the ability to secrete pheromones, enhancing her ability to heal, and allowing her to "communicate" with plants.

Pamela Isley was reborn as Poison Ivy, the meta-human eco-terrorist. She has a complicated relationship with Batman, admiring his dedication and his drive, thankful that he saved her life, but also despising him for interfering in her affairs. Although twisted, she does possess a moral compass, unwilling to take life just to take life, even going so far as to protect children and animals. As Ivy, she continues her crusade for Mother Earth, spilling blood in the hopes of watering the seeds for a better tomorrow.
