Description     The Voidglimmers are named for the bioluminescent spots on their sides, which in the darkness cast a glow that creates a shadow around a spot that ends up making the side of the Voidglimmer look like a smile. Of course, this isn’t the “intention” of the spots, it’s just what humans see. The spots can actually flash and are used as communication between individuals.

They’re carnivores and get their food by crushing it to death with their ossified proboscises. Unfortunately, they have gotten confused at times, and so their prey does include people. The thought of seeing a smile in the darkness before your inevitable death has given the Common Voidglimmers the nickname of “The Bogeymen”.

A smaller relative of the Common Voidglimmer is the Dwarf Voidglimmer, which is actually a delicacy in some human settlements. For one reason or another, they’re attracted to the sound of trumpets, and so people will play trumpets to herd hundreds of them over. When they’re killed, their smile remains for a bit, and they’re served fresh in candlelit restaurants. Sometimes, they’re referred to as “The Snack That Smiles Back”. Many visitors are mildly terrified by the prospect of eating a smiling meal, but many still do, and it’s almost become a sort of dare.
