Description
The Austrian Empire (German: Kaisertum Österreich) was founded in 1804 by Holy Roman emperor Francis II of Habsburg in response to Napoleon Bonaparte’s proclamation of the French Empire earlier that year. Despite a string of searing military defeats, territorial and human losses and a temporary ‘alliance’, Austria remained an enemy of Napoleon until his defeat in 1815 and played a major role at the subsequent Congress of Vienna, which redrew the map of Europe. The empire transformed into the dual monarchy of Austria-Hungary following the Austro-Hungarian Compromise of 1867. Defeat in the First World War led to the empire’s final dissolution and partition by the victorious Allies.

The flag of the Austrian Empire had been used as the banner of the Habsburg monarchy since the late seventeenth century. It consisted of two equal horizontal bands of black and gold-yellow, the colours of both the House of Habsburg and the Holy Roman Empire. The original design also included the black double-headed imperial eagle.
