Description The HMS Enoch was returning from a supply run to Germany when she was struck by a torpedo from a German U-Boat. The ship, HMS Enoch, a relatively new steamer from the Obsidian Steamship Company, was gravely wounded, and only had minutes to live. The ship was struck by one torpedo, which hit one of the boilers, causing a massive steam explosion. Seconds later, the ship would be rocked by a second explosion, caused by a huge updraft of coal dust being ignited by the flames from the ship's boilers. Now an out of control blaze was burning in the ship's two lower decks, making evacuating the ship a very nightmarish affair. The ship continues to chug along at less than five knots, her helm unresponsive, her steam pressure dropping rapidly, and her engine room not responding to orders, likely due to all of her engineering staff being killed. A single lifeboat was all that could be launched from the ship, loaded with ten survivors. One would later die from his injuries.

I wrote the story of the HMS Enoch as a fitting tribute to all the merchant mariners lost as a result of submarine warfare in WW1 and WW2. While the HMS Enoch is not a real ship, she embodies a story that was all too commonplace in the World Wars, and embodies the harsh reality that many mariners had to face in warfare, whether conscripted into service or not. If you like what you see, you can check out the other images in the gallery on my profile. But that will do it for today. I hope you enjoy. More art to come soon!
