Was there a novice category in the competition? Also it might be worth looking at previous winners again to get some idea of the judges expectations. Let me know which image you finally choose and the closing date etc so that me and the boys can send vibs down the ether! Talking of water colours...when you have time I'd like to see "masquerade" pictures, when they are finished..............Be good.

Maybe you won't get shown, maybe few people will know that you even entered the competition - but you do. You made the effort to enter. By doing so you have had to review your work, to be objective. By selecting your best pieces you are identifying constructive, positive, aspects of your efforts. A short list of three might mean that you have identified three suitable classes for your pieces? Keep them in mind as you work during the next 12 months and I guarantee that you will get noticed next year. But if you did get hang this year, wow......... Will you enter a portrait, animal study and an abstract??

Yes I am glad I have made an effort .
I checked out the entrants and there are heaps of them
I have entered a animal study, an abstract, a portrait in monochrome, a nature print and a colour print. ... a friend helped go thru my prints and convinced me to enter 3 in the monochrome section.
thank you so much for your encouragement

I had something bad happen though. I took them in to be professionally mounted and they made a terrible mess of them. I needed to get them posted by Friday afternoon and when I went in to get them they hadn't been done. I came back at 4:30 and they had messed them up with glue across the front of them and badly mounted. I have been so upset and depressed over that. The man at the post office convinced me to send them anyway and all I have done is fret. I am about to email the competition organizer to see if they will allow me to replace the prints with undamaged ones.

That really is unfortunate, no very unprofessional on someone's part. Some form of recompense is necessary. Mounting is quite an easy process so when you pay somebody else to do the job for you you are paying for 'quality and care' - something which you did not, regrettablly, receive on this occasion. I like your selection especially your centre piece 'fire and ice' (much better than the derisory name 'spud'.Also 'Ash Island weed V2', which I don't think I've seen before...

I know it takes up more of your time but, maybe, the lesson here is (sadly) don't trust anyone with your work - you want something like this done properly? Then do it yourself.... Ah, shit and derision. I do hope that you are allowed to submit replacements. Please let me know how you get on...

It was awful!
I have already started on my form of "recompense". In Australia it is difficult for a female to get anywhere by complaining etc...we are just ignored or abused. So I have been using my network to spread the word about Mr. Bernie Neville's behaviour and have shown the result of his "professionalism". In my younger years I completed a Bachelor's degrees in visual arts at Newcastle University and I was an art teacher for a few years. Even though I have not exhibited for over ten years I am still acquainted with a number of artistic friends etc and have started to spread the word to avoid the man!
I emailed the photographic salon and they rang me yesterday to arrange swapping the damaged prints with undamaged works. They wanted to know the name of the framer too so I let them know! It turned out they wanted more of the prints I had in my folder which made me feel very pleased. I only had six with me and they picked four of them. The ones they picked were

I have learned a lesson for sure. I have bought a mat cutter and will buy my supplies in Newcastle from now on.

Sorry you had to go through such trauma but it sounds as though you gained a little from the experience! There is no overt discrimination here in the UK, if anything it's the complete opposite (we are all equal with some of us being even " more equal than others"...). Good plan to dent the man's reputation and then back to the business in hand. It seems as though you have done okay with the organisers (another feather in your hat....).

I can recall being able to cut oval matts free hand with a scalpel. I still have my cutter (an 'Olfa', must have had it nearly twenty years now). Ee those were the days...

When does the selection phase start? If any of your work is displayed with you be able to go and take a photograph of it ??!!

Keep the faith....

Hi
I do have a matt cutter I guess I have to get a little more faith in my ability and get it out of retirement...I won't be trying to cut free hand ovals though ...wow at your skill there
I didn't get any of my pictures into the exhibition
I spoke to the president of the local camera club who is a prize winning photographer and he had 5 out of 20 get through. He said that the judges were pretty tough this year. He was running the projector for the slide/digital sections. He said they overlooked superb landscapes and nature shots in favour of human based images. Anyway I guess I have room for improvement and I will keep trying
I joined the APS(Australian Photographic Society) and the PSA (Photographic Society of America) so I can have access to their services etc ..it can't hurt?

Hello,
Yes, it's all a learning process. I'm sure your artistic background tells you that competitions/shows are a lot to do with trends and not just individual taste. Obviously a good ideaa to join the societies because of the insight you will gain. You might know what's in vogue next year and by then you should have a larger, broad portfolio to dip into. Like your drawing and painting, you know that practice sharpens the skill. I am sorry that you did not get shown but you were there, you entered - you made the effort and that's what really counts. Make sure you have a good look at the winning entries. Now get that camera out and get back out into the sunshine!!

Hi,
Yes I agree totally
Art is totally subjective and I need to work on my skills.
I knew I had a very small chance of being accepted and I am OK with the outcome
I just had get the old wheel turning and start somewhere
thanks for the encouragement
I am looking forward to my creative future
