Description The First World War is over, and the Treaties have been signed. The former Ottoman Empire is now the new nation of Turkey, the rest of its empire has been divided arbitrarily by the British and French. The Austro-Hungarian Empire is gone, and in its place are several fledgling states. The Russian Civil War has ended in a Bolshevik victory, with most independence movements swallowed up by a new-Russian dominated country. The German Empire remains the most intact of the major Central Powers, though its monarchy was overthrown at home. Meanwhile, the Italian people are furious with the way the Paris Peace Conference went, gaining little of what they had hoped upon entering the war, a war that was already unpopular among the Italian people when the government chose to enter it. Across Europe, new democracies established by or even forced by the Entente now struggle to deal with the devastation of war, the repayment of reparations, and paramilitary organizations of either an exasperated proletariat, struggling under conscription and war-time anti-labor crackdowns, or of demobilized soldiers forming paramilitary units, believing that their defeat was the fault of Communist intrigue or Liberal weakness or even just a belief that their monarchies need to be strengthened or restored. Across the globe, the conscription and devastation and exploitation of both empire and global war have seen the rise of many independence movements of those stuck under the jackboot of European empires. The Great War is officially over, but it would be naïve to call any of this "peace."
