Description Here, I present the second ship in the Vessel Personas series, Lady Titanic. This is being posted now as it not only part of the VP series, but is also a part of my memorial tribute projects for the 100-year centennial anniversary of Titanic’s real-life sinking. Before I move on to her design and biography, here’s the brief explanation again of the Vessel Personas concept and its rules for those unfamiliar with the series:

In this AU-setup, during the construction/creation phase of ships and other vessels, at the exact moment the main body is completed, there is potential for a ‘spark’ of life to occur. Not much is known or understood about this spark, how it works, what affects it, or why it happens or does not happen, but when it does occur, the vessel gains sentient life. This sentience, or soul, is very special in the nature of its existence and is also extremely complex and difficult to define. The soul is created within the ship’s physical body and so exists inside it. Body and soul are one, with a direct connection between them, but the two exist in different states with different sets of principles regarding matter and existence for each. The body remains in one physical form, while the soul is capable of four different states of existence. In the second state of being, the soul can ‘project’ or materialize anywhere within the interior of the vessel into a humanoid form comprised of a complex matter/energy structure. In this form, the soul can be referred to as a persona. The soul is also capable of ‘detaching’ or disconnecting from the physical body partially or completely, and both can continue to exist separately. Note: a more detailed analysis document containing all the information about this concept will be available soon. It’s complicated, but understandable, I hope.

And also again: The appearance of each persona is influenced by many different factors. For each ship in this series, I will be doing the persona’s clothing design in the form of a dress, since that’s where I do my best fashion design work. Everything included in the design is directly inspired from the ship, and her personality is shaped from her storyline, circumstances, the people around her, and a bit of my own personal fan speculation.

Note: The basic title of ‘Lady’ (or ‘Sir’ in the rarer cases of male personas) is used to refer specifically to the soul when it’s in the form of its persona and sometimes to show politeness or respect when addressing a persona. Souls are normally called, and call themselves, the name of their physical vessel (and when referring to the soul, it’s not written in italics).

Now that the introduction is complete, without further ado, I present Lady Titanic’s design, profile, and specifications. (They are all presented in present tense.)

----------

Persona design points:

- She is a Caucasian female, and appears to be around 30 years old.
- She has hair of darkest brown that she wears up in a tight, wrapped bun. When down, it reaches to her lower back.
- Her eyes are sapphire blue in color, as deep as the ocean.
- The base black color of her dress is the color of Titanic’s hull.
- The white, wraparound panel and gold trim on the top of her dress represent the top colors of Titanic.
- The sequined sparkles on her dress correspond to the ship’s portholes.
- The belt of the dress is high-waisted and is the same color as the ship’s funnels.
- The red border at the end of her dress represents the draft line of Titanic’s keel.
- She wears plain black, slightly-heeled shoes with black stockings, and also wears a corset under her dress.
- Her earrings are white stars with a red outline, representing that she is a White Star Line ship.
- She is tall, standing at 170 cm (5’7”). Her weight varies on which state of being she’s in, but she would weigh 61 kg (135 pounds) when in a fully-physical state.
- It’s not visible under her dress, but she has the logo of White Star Line imprinted in the center-middle of her back with ‘RMS Titanic’ underneath it to further illustrate her identity.

Personality: Titanic has all the attributes and refinery of a first-class lady. She upholds a polished and polite demeanor, appearance, and decorum, and has the finest senses of dedication, duty, and honor. While she may be a history-making ship and truly stunning and amazing in so many ways, she remains modest and does not show off or boast about her status. She is also not overconfident in any way and she doesn’t buy into any of the ‘unsinkable’ press that surrounds her, nor does she care for records or press solely for the sake of prestige. She would rather get her passengers safely across the ocean rather than arrive at her destination in record time, something she states many times. Titanic does acknowledge everything that she has, and though she is inexperienced, she knows she has everything behind her to aid her in becoming one of the finest elite. She has a desire to prove herself and be the very best she can be. Her confidence radiates from within and by what she feels, and also from the genuine praise of those close to her.

Titanic maintains her sophisticated, professional image, but she also has no trouble ‘letting her hair down’ and she’s not afraid to have fun and enjoy herself or try new things. She has very much a free spirit. Titanic cares neither for superficiality nor shallow conversation, preferring genuine discussion and people. She admires hard-working attitudes and individuals, and to her, class distinction from wealth has little meaning; she treats everyone equally.

As far as relationships go, she doesn’t get along very well with J. Bruce Ismay, and though she respects her captain, she barely knows him. Her closest relationship is with her architect Thomas Andrews, whom she loves, and she is also close with her two sisters, Olympic and Britannic.

Background:

Commissioned by the White Star Line company, designed by Harland and Wolff architect Thomas Andrews, and built in the Harland and Wolff shipyards in Belfast, Ireland, Titanic is the largest ship in history, equipped with the very finest in facility and luxury. She may be a new ship in the White Star Line’s fleet, and she may be naïve and inexperienced, but she is a fast learner, and knows that she has everything and everyone behind her to be successful and right up there with the best of them. She will certainly make history on her maiden voyage, but just how that will happen remains to be seen...

Abilities:

When connected with Titanic, she possesses the following abilities:

- She can feel things going on within her body and also locate people, but these abilities are specifically localized to one or two sections at a time, and it’s impossible for her to feel everything at once.
- Sometimes her emotions display noticeably in the ship. When she is happy or excited, the ship’s systems run faster and smoother. When she is depressed, sad, tense, or angry, the systems decrease slightly in efficiency and become more temperamental with more malfunctions.
- Comparatively, condition and status of the ship affect her. She feels best when she is running with her engines at full power, but she can also feel fine when she’s running on low power or when she’s standing still in dock by adjusting to the lower power phases. Also, when in persona state, she cannot be physically injured, but when the ship is damaged, it translates into corresponding pain or injuries to her persona form.

When partially disconnected from Titanic, she can leave the ship and travel away from it. She only retains partial sensitivity to her main physical body and loses all of her other abilities. She can vaguely feel major things like the ship’s traveling speed (whether she’s moving or standing still), but that’s it. After detaching from the ship, she has ninety-one hours before she enters the complete-detachment phase, which lasts for nine hours. She must get back to the ship to reconnect within seven of the nine hours, or she will be permanently separate and unable to reconnect again.

This whole picture turned out really, really nice and I’m very satisfied with it. The only thing is I wish I could've recreated the background myself, but I didn't have enough time and ended up having to use the movie screencap for it. My art and coloring styles are still erratic, but I feel the shading turned out better than in Voyager’s picture. Lady Titanic is a personal favorite of mine in this series, along with Lady Voyager. She has such a tragic, heartbreaking story, especially remembering everything and everyone who was lost and the beauty that she once was, but her story is also so powerful and intriguing. -hugs Titanic-

Lady Nautilus from 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea will be next.

Technical details and art information:

Time taken: Around 100 hours spent on the concept, the whole picture, and the description. Yes, I take a long time.
Program used: GIMP 2.6.
Tablet/mouse: Mouse.

*I took some artistic liberty on all the colors used. They’re not accurate to the actual base design colors, but instead, the colors are referenced from multiple DVD-quality screencaps from the movie and then are lightened/altered by a few shades. Not a very precise method, but I like the colors I used and I think they work.

*Also, all of Lady Titanic’s colors are tinted with an orange hue to match with sunset setting. Her skin is really not that tan and the gold dress accents and necklace are much brighter in regular lighting.

* Unfortunately, as I said above, I didn’t have time to recreate the scene in the background like I originally planned and had to settle for using the screencap from the movie in the background. I will eventually recreate the scene on my own and update this picture, but for now, the screencap will have to do. It looks much better than anything I could do with my current art skill anyway.

*I used one reference (non-creditable) for Lady Titanic’s pose, but she is all original art, drawn by me.
