Description Chapter 2
August 29th

Katherine reached behind her and grabbed the first thing that came by. With all her strength she threw a pillow at Death. The fluffy, soft projectile bounced off with a small squeak noise as Death looked at her in silence. It then released a deafening scream and slowly started to crumble into ashes. Katherine screamed back as she watched Death fall apart into a pile of ash onto her floor. And then it was over; Katherine sat panting on her bed, looking at the ashes that laid on the floor. There was an unsettling silence as Katherine tried to calm herself while her mind was racing at a hundred miles an hour. She finally mustered the courage to stand up and walked over to the ashes. She crouched over them and examined them, "Did... Did that really work?" A pillar of fire suddenly erupted behind her causing her to fall forward and hit her face on the floor. She quickly turned around and scooted her back against the wall as the fire continued to burn. "Of course that didn't work!" Death yelled as it walked out of the pillar which extinguished itself.

While frightened, she managed to ask, "Are you going to kill me?" Death only shook it's head. "No, it isn't your time yet." Slightly relieved Katherine stood up but still kept her back to the wall. "Then what are you doing here?" Death gave a slight laugh, "Such courage now." She didn't give a response to that statement and only waited for her question to be answered. "I have a special gift for you, something I give you mortals from time to time. A way to communicate with the dead." Katherine became confused, "Why?" If Death had a face it would be grinning, "It's to serve a greater purpose but what that is, you have to figure out on your own." Katherine offered an annoyed look, "Really? You're going to give me some cryptic crap?"
"I could just kill you if you would like."

Katherine shook her hands in reassurance and gave a nervous laugh, "No no, that's alright. So what's this gift?" Death lifted up it's hand and a small orb of light hovered above it's opened palm. Death's scythe began to release drops of liquid metal that flew around the orb and began to connect together. Katherine watched in awe as more tiny drops and shapes came together around the orb until they blanketed the light. As the seconds fell away she started to notice the form the object was now taking, it looked like a cell phone. "Interesting choice of gift." Katherine said with some wonder in her voice. "Here I was expecting some strange artifact or ancient stroll."
"Nah, can you imagine carrying that thing around with you wherever you go. Everyone would think you're crazy." Katherine gave a genuine laugh at the statement and was beginning to calm down. "Nice to know you're considerate." She no longer stayed by the wall and walked closer to Death to see the phone in it's hand. The device had finished it's forming and it slowly hovered from Death's hand over to Katherine. A little unsure, she hesitated before reaching out and grabbing the device. It had a sleek design to it and felt oddly light, almost as if it wasn't really there. She pressed a button on it and the small screen lit up showing what looked to be a typical cell phone interface. She looked up at Death, "So how do I use it?"
"Don't worry, someone will come along shortly to teach you how to use your new phone. But alas I must be off though, I have some souls to collect and people to murder. I'll see you around Ms. Parker." She gave a nervous laugh, not really too sure if Death was serious or not.

Death snapped it's fingers and instantly it crumbled into dust leaving Katherine alone in the middle of the night.

---

Katherine stood in her bathroom for a few moments, looking at herself in the mirror. She still wasn't too sure whether she was dreaming or not. She looked at the phone in her hand, something she had done a few times already, before turning the faucet. She let the sounds of running water fill her ears before taking her free hand and splashing water onto her face. She had hoped that the water would wash off the dream she was currently trapped in but when she looked back at her hand, she saw her reflection coming back from the phone. She turned the faucet back off and leaned against the sink, "Well I might as well mess around a bit and see how this thing works." She went through the settings and menus of the phone but found it to be exactly like any other cell phone. She dialed Gabriel's number and was actually surprised to find it working.

"Mm... Hello?" came out of the receiver, she brought the phone up to her ear, "Hey, Gabe. It's me Katherine; can you come over real quick? Something really weird happened" She could hear him moving around on the other side of the phone, "It's the middle of the night though." She sighed, "Yeah I know but this is serious, can you-"
"Hi there!" yelled out a voice behind Katherine which caused her to scream out and drop the phone. "Holy shit!" she yelled out as she turned to face the voice only to find herself looking at her own reflection. "Hello? Who's there?" She called out shaking, as she looked around the room. "I'm here." Said the voice again, once more coming from the mirror. She looked back at the mirror but instead of finding herself she saw another young woman. "Who are you?" Katherine asked the mirror lady. "I am Serena, your friendly neighborhood guide to the spirit world." She said with such cheerfulness.

"And why are you in my mirror?" Serena gave her another smile before coming out of the mirror. Katherine backed up as Serena floated in front of her,  "Is that better?" Katherine stared at her until she finally uttered, "You're a ghost?!" Serena looked slightly confused before she realized, "Oh I guess you haven't seen one until now huh?" Katherine merely shook her head. "Yes, I am a ghost, and I am here to help you with your newly found ability."
"Ability?"
"Your ability to communicate with the dead silly." She stuck her tongue out through her smile as Katherine took in the information. "But I thought I could only talk with the dead using the phone." A panicked look coated Serena's face and she quickly answered, "Oh well yeah, but I'm a special case since I'm here to assist you hehe." Katherine disregarded her odd reaction to the question and picked the phone up from the floor.

She pressed a button and the screen came back on. It showed that the call with Gabriel had ended about a minute ago. "I should probably call him back and tell him I'm alright, but it's good to see that the phone's ok." Serena hovered closer to Katherine and looked at the phone, "Ah, what an interesting design. Death has always had a nice eye for appearance. Anyway, don't worry about breaking the phone, it's indestructible."
"Oh really?" Serena nodded, "Yep, you see when Death first started giving us methods to communicate with the dead, they would often break as we are clumsy people."  Curious, Katherine asked, "What happens if it gets lost or stolen?"
"Well it's your responsibility to keep track of your phone, but from the moment you touched it, it implanted a mental tracking device in your brain. So you'll always have a general idea of where it is at all times. You don't really have to worry about someone else using your phone since it's pretty much a normal phone unless you know how to use it."

Katherine looked over the phone once more before asking, "And how do I use it?"
"You use your phone exactly like any other phone, you just put in a number but then you add a special number combination and there you go; you're calling dead people." Katherine was surprised how simple it sounded, "How does that work?" Serena placed a finger on her chin as she tried to remember exactly how the phone operated. "Well you see, the phone works in the way that it 'Calls' the last person who had that phone number when they died."
"But what if someone has that number right now?"
"The phone only calls the last person who died with that number, so it will never call the living. If someone dies with that number now though, then you can no longer contact the previous spirit and you'll instead contact the new one." Katherine gave a slight nod, "Alright, sounds simple enough. What's the special number combination?" Serena gladly gave the number to Katherine who made a mental note of it as to not forget it.

"Let me go find a piece of paper to write it down on." Katherine left her bathroom and walked into her living room with Serena following close behind. "Oh! You sure have a nice place." Katherine looked back at her, "Yeah, it was my Grandmother's. She left it to me when she passed away." She watched Serena just fly around her living room examining random things around the room. Katherine found a piece of paper and wrote the number she needed in case she would forget before placing it in her wallet. "So how long are you going to, well, be around?" Katherine asked. Serena returned her attention back to Katherine, "Hm, let's see... For the rest of your life."
"What?! Why?!"
"Well I'm your assistant so I'm here for good." Katherine was becoming uncertain about the whole thing. "Um well is there any chance you could just not stay?" A frown began to form on Serena's face, "But this is my first time being someone's assistant... what will the others say when they find out that you didn't want me?" She appeared to be on the verge of tears which Katherine had to admit would be interesting to see from a ghost but she quickly tried to reassure her, "Ok ok, you can stay, just don't cry. I just don't see why I would need you around for the rest of my life." Serena's expression quickly reverted back to it's default happy mood, "Oh thank you! Believe me, you won't be disappointed in keeping me around." Serena began happily roaming throughout the house again as Katherine just sighed.

She heard what sounded like someone leaving their car and looked out the window to see Gabriel running towards the house, "Aw crap, I forgot to call him back." She walked towards the door just as Gabriel began knocking loudly. "Jesus Gabe, keep it down." She said as she opened the door and let him in. "Are you alright?"
"Um yeah, about earlier sorry about that." Gabe quickly looked her over to make sure she was alright, "Oh man, don't do that. At least not in the middle of the night." He said with a sigh of relief and a smile. "So what was that all about?" Katherine wasn't too sure about whether she should tell him when he said something else, "Who is that?" Katherine turned to see Serena who was just watching them, she held a surprised look, "You can see me?"
"Why wouldn't I be able too?" He asked back as Katherine placed a hand on his shoulder, "I'll explain, it's been a strange night."

---

Gabriel sat still as he took in all the information that Katherine was giving him, with Serena adding more detail. She wasn't too sure what he was thinking, but for now it looked like he was merely digesting everything. "I don't trust it." He finally utter, "Yeah, I kind of don't either, but apparently I have to serve some purpose." He only shook his head, "Forget that, this seems like something you shouldn't get involved with." Serena chimed in, "Well Death merely meant that the act of giving humans a way to communicate with the Dead was to serve a greater purpose. What you do with that gift is up to you." Katherine only looked at the phone in her hand, "Maybe we should give it a try then." Gabriel stood up and walked over to Katherine, "Kat, we're talking about Death here. Whatever that purpose is, I doubt it bodes well for you." She looked at him, then the phone once more, "Death already paid me a visit, I think that alone is a bad sign, so I may as well just dive right in."

He sighed but did not stop her as she prepared to make the call, but who would be her first was something she had to think over. A number popped into her head a few times, but she tried to move it to the back of her thoughts for it to only keep reappearing. Her want to call the number hurt and she became visually distressed as her hand began to shake. Just the thought of calling him bothered her, but she needed too. She began placing the number but Gabriel quickly noticed and stopped her from putting in the last numbers needed, "Don't call him." She looked up at him as a small tear formed at the edge of her eye. Serena looked on, unaware of what was transpiring between the two, "Don't call who?"
"It's none of your business." He answered and looked at Katherine, "Call someone else." She nodded her head and deleted the number on the screen before replacing it with a new one.

She decided to place it on speaker and they listened as it rang. Finally the voice of an older woman came onto the phone. "Hello?" Katherine gave a small disbelieving laugh as the beginning of tears still remained on her eyes, "Hi Grandma." There was a moment of silence before she finally answered, "Oh Sweetie how are you?"
"I'm fine Grandma, how are you?"
"I'm doing fine Sweetie, though I can not seem to remember where I place the egg timer." Gabriel laughed a bit, "Who's there with you?" Her Grandmother asked, "It's Gabe Grandma, he's here with me."
"Oh how are you dear?"
"I'm good Mrs. Parker." He answered back, "That's good, I hope you're taking care of my Granddaughter."
"Yes Ma'am, I try too." He said with a slight grin, as Katherine stuck her tongue out at him. "Just don't get any funny ideas Mister." They both laughed before he answered, "No Ma'am, I wouldn't want to cross you."
"Damn straight you wouldn't, I may be dead but you'll be coming here eventually and I'll give you a good stern talking to if you did." Katherine couldn't help but smile over the casualness of the conversation, "It was nice talking to you again Grandma. I'm happy I got to hear from you again."
"As am I Sweetie, now you take care of yourself."
"I will Grandma, I love you."
"I love you too Sweetie." and with that the call ended.

Katherine wiped the tears off her face as she remained smiling. Gabriel was smiling too, mostly because of the fact that nothing bad happened when she called. Serena had a small pout on her face that Katherine noticed and had to ask about, "What's the matter with you?"
"You didn't introduce me! That's so rude." Katherine giggled a bit, "Sorry, I was kind of caught up in the moment." Serena's face soon softened and she smiled back, "Very well then, I forgive you."
"So what do you plan to do with the phone?" Gabriel asked, "Hm, I'm still not too sure what I can do with it."
"Are you going to tell anyone else?"
"Not too sure about that either, Alexia is never good at keeping things quiet, but I can probably tell Evelyn. Just have to be picky about who else." Gabriel nodded in agreement, "Yeah, you don't want to end up like those people with superpowers who have to deal with the weight of the world on their shoulders by themselves." Katherine laughed, "As if this counts as a super power."

She soon yawned though, as the events of the night were catching up to her. "I should probably head to bed soon, seeing as I didn't get too much sleep."
"You're telling me, I got even less sleep than you." Gabriel commented. "You can sleep on the couch if you want to." She offered, "I don't know, not to sure how I feel with her around." He said, meaning Serena. "Oh don't worry about me, I'll probably be spending most of the night looking around the house."
"Because that's totally not an invasion of my privacy." Katherine remarked sarcastically. "Better get use to it, cause you're not going to have too much privacy anymore with me around." She replied with a smile. "Don't make me regret letting you stay."
"Aw, looks like no more special alone time for you." Gabriel said with a grin as he sat on the couch, she only returned a look of annoyance, "Don't make me regret letting you stay as well."

She went back into her bedroom and let out a sigh as she sat down. Thoughts about how much her life had changed in the matter of a few hours lingered in her mind. She placed the phone on the night stand and decided to worry about it later. As she was about to lay down, she looked over at the pile of ashes that laid on the floor by the foot of her bed. "Damn it, I guess I'm cleaning that up later today."
