I had no idea that the Imperial Shuttles had an escape-pod of sorts.

That it does, but from what I read, there is only so much room in it. Anyone of low rank (such as stormtroopers and enlisted personnel) would sadly be left to be sucked into space if there wasn't any spare room. High ranking Imperials came as a priority in such cases.
