I loved the ship's design and I wished this was better than it was portrayed in the TIE Fighter game.
Wookiepedia said it was unsuccessful due to low manoeuvrability, light lasers, cheap construction with poor materials, light shields and an oldΒ navi-computer with coding errors and small two jump memory. Yet it was an Outer Rim hit with a low cost and good servicing package.
Granted, the Rebels were on the ropes at the time, but if it had the chance and was better made, it could have been a winner, falling between the A-Wing and X-Wing.

This looks incredibly different from all the models & images I've seen. Where did those forward-sweeping wings come from? And the droid socket?

I know it differently: the T-Wing was a proposal as an interceptor competitioning against the A-Wing, which ultimately won.
Which makes much more sense, the A-Wing is one of the newest crafts in the RebAlliance, why would it need replacement?
The only problem the A-Wing had was itΒ΄s slow production, as there was no big factory for it.
