Description Chapter 1
The First Day

All I saw was darkness, a sensation met with a soon to follow wave of confusion, then terror...my eyes thrust open and a flew to my feet....I looked around but nothing seemed familiar, nothing at all.  I shook my head trying to think clearly, leaving me with little success, but I did remember a few things, i remember the cold hard floor of a worn down stable and the harsh hands and bitter words of the cruel men around me...no, around US, yes it was me and 6 others trapped in that hell....and now?  Now we were tossed aside, they probably became bored with us I thought with a snort.  After the initial reaction my mood quickly changed from anger and frustration to fear and a cold dread...If i was to make it out of this alive I needed to find the other 6 horses, and fast.

A mare struggled through the thorns and brambles, the small spikes scratching at her coat and leaving pricks of blood. Her grey-splotched coat was soon stained red in places, and she tore herself free from the trapping brambles, flinging herself into an open area. She stood there, legs splayed, breathing hard. She closed her eyes, heart racing. Were was she? What was this place? Why were they abandoned? Her legs shook and she lowered herself down to her belly, dark green eyes flashing in the shadows. What easy prey she would make for a predator.

I gathered my bearings quickly and began trotting along the outskirts of this small cove of trees, hoping, praying, that perhaps someone was nearby.  In the back of my mind I began calculating dreadful things, like how long I could survive, how long I had to find the others, how long one could survive without food....water...factoring in heat and cold, age and health...I scowled 'stop it' i mentally scolded myself 'stop it stop  it stop it' in that instant my ears flipped and i slowed to an abrupt halt..."Hello?" I called out

The mare flicked her ears, eyes snapping open and her head jerked upwards. Her ears twitched. She was certain she heard a voice. Then.... Her eyes widened. She was not here alone. She got to her hooves, long, light grey tail swishing. "Hello?" she called out. Her voice was soft, but it carried on the breeze.

I couldn't help but let a smile of determination cross over my face, i didn't want to get my hopes up but i thought for sure that I heard a soft voice in the wind.  Yes, yes, i most certainly did.  I picked up my feet and trotted briskly, ignoring the quick twinge of pain in protest to the sharp movements.  In an instant my eyes fell upon her, she was like nothing i had ever seen before.  Pale skinned, light haired, delicate features, proud eyes, all proving to be the most angelic combination I had ever known.  I didn't quite know what to say, but I'd like to think my presence was enough, and that the silence was that of awe and not hesitation as I approached her.

Her eyes widened, and she gave me a small smile. "I'm Liela." Her voice was soft, with a slightly musical tone hidden underneath her words. She took a tentative step forwards, towards me. "where are we? What are we doing here?"

"I dont know." I replied honestly, my voice faltering slightly.

"Well... Someone must surely be looking for us," she replied confidently. "Oh." Her voice faltered, eyes falling upon a gash in my leg, bleeding heavily. "Oh... You're hurt.."

I glanced down casually, oh, my leg was bleeding, quite badly, but my eyes were drawn to her blood soaked flank. "And So are you." I commented smoothly "We must find a place to rest, lets move" We leaned onto eachother, Leila and I, bloody and tired and confused. What a pathetically beautiful pair we were. I led her to the heart of the small cove, lowering her gently onto the ground, and then taking my place beside her.  The night was haunting, and we stayed close, yet I was unaware of how deep my wound really was...and i was bound to catch an infection.

I fought the deadly fever into the dark hours, Leila was my night beauty. Her gentle voice was comforting, however her beliefs were terribly naïve.
"They must be searching for us, they'll help you get well again" She soothed, grasping for hope, trying to sound convincing.
"They arent"  I hissed through my teeth
"We will be rescued, they've noticed we are missing." She said, a bit harsher.
"We are not missed"  I snapped matching her silent fury.
"The world is forgiving." She countered, anger seeping into her voice
"And we are forgotten"  I replied, more solemnly now, watching her expression change from passion to anger, how bitter it was to sink your teeth into the realization that while you are sent to your doom not one tear is shed for you.
She grew angry with me, her eyes flashed.
"God will be merciful!" She all but screamed.
I shook my head softly, my eyes finally finding hers, "Yet we are abandoned." I whispered.  And with that, we slept.
