Description I am going back to this place now that I know where it is.
ND filer top and bottome and grad Blue on the bottom to darken the water. Also I did an adjustment layer in photoshop with a black fill to darking the water and the sky but not on the boats. This way the boats grabs and creates the leading lines to the walkway behind them.

Beautiful shot! Really love how you have darken the sky and water to a deeper blue. Really works well here. However, I am wondering why you took this with a wide open aperture? Was it taken hand held? Otherwise, I would like to see more of the forground in focus. Like the boats on the left looks slightly soft.

Someone told me to start using f/22 for night shots to get them sharper and I forgot to change for the shot. Thank you and no worries I am going back, this was a shot to remind me that I was there.

This is a great shot in any case. But when you visit it again, I think even a f/11 or f/13 would be enought. I think for many Nikon camera, diffraction starts to kick if you stop it down any further which may also effect the sharpness.

I will do just that. I will add that to my note book that I take with me to remember. Check my journal please I have a question that you may be able to answer.

The boats and reflections look amazing!

One of my best friends might be moving to Seattle for a year to work. I'm going to have to visit him sometime, and you and I will have to go shoot around town.

Yes and no. I can't use it or I don't until I take it in to get the CCD cleaned. There is what looks like a water stain on the CCD.

No worries, I will get it fix soon. Or maybe there is a camera fairy that will bring me a D200. That won't happen, stupid fairies.

If the fairy thing works out for you, have it bring me a D80.

UrbanRural-Photo In reply to cappaholic [2006-12-13 15:32:23 +0000 UTC]

D80? I will tell'em to bring a Hasselblad H3D and then use the D80 as the back up. Shoot high and if you fall short you got what you wanted anyway.

I really like the cloud lighting that day - I also like how the focus isn't on one boat... adds more depth to the theme and shows different elements with each new viewing.

I love the serene blue of the sea, glass-like texture of the water, and the foggy, yet not gray sky really appeals to me.

I remember when I lived in Seattle, makes me wish that I took pictures back then.

traffic jam.

i think the lights have some halo that could be diminished, though it's not really an issue. and for some reason the left foreground appears a bit fuzzy, though i can't figure out why (other than too much sambuca last night).

love the composition, the eyes following the water like a trail, bordered symmetrically on each side by a different line.

The lights look a bit harsh, but that was probably unavoidable. I love the colors and the atmosphere. I think cars are just about the ugliest thing in the world, but somehow boats tend to look much better. Everyone should ride a boat instead!

UrbanRural-Photo In reply to diamondie [2006-12-11 17:58:40 +0000 UTC]

I have been think about getting a boat next year. There are tons of shots i would love to do on the water. Cars are not so bad if they are taking you to the water.
