Description Yeah she looks like a cow,
sorry bout that.
Missing one arm in some of the shots.

How i made the doll:

1.Concept,
i drew up a concept one on a2 in real size..
which i redid after her torso was done...
[she was ment as a SD but her torso was too small]
Redrew the concept again on A2 using my Unoa and Iris as refs.
Her upper body is about the same sizes as Unoa..
and.. her legs don't match anything anymore i'm afraid.

Make notes for yourself of how you want the headcap and ankle/wrist systems.

2.I used the ends of brushes to hallow out my previous
bjd's limbs. But learned this isn't the best system in the world. So i bought a pack of chinese chop sticks.
And put the clay around it.
When it's completely dried you can simply pull the clay off the sticks because their slightly polished and the clay wont bind to it.

3. I used the sketch to measure the sizes of the beads i might wanna use.
After that i sprayed the beads, or else the clay won't bind to it. For my sd and Tiny i simply sanded the beads.

4.With a drill i drilled in the shapes of the joint openings in the beads, and drilled the elastic tunnels bigger.

5. Attached the beads to the limbs.
And put clay on the sockets, and pressed the beads into it.
To get a perfect fitted joint socket.

-If you want double joints,
Use a bead to make an inprint of the joint sockets.
Let this dry.
Then put a bit of tape over the Elastic tunnels and put a chunk of clay in between the limbs where the double joint should be. And press them together.
And you will end up with an almost perfect base for your double joint part.
[just cut of the remaining clay chunks and drill it hallow]

--Detaild for the head.
I used a big bead for the head...
but i spend 2 days carving it hallow x3.
And added clay at the bottom to shape the chin scheeks,
and well lower facial features.

Put a bit of tape over the neck elastic tunnel,
and pressed the ball of clay on it to create the neck joint socket.
And then added details and shape to it.
Rubbed it a bit smooth with water, but that doesnt work that well on heads.

6.I used a big chuncky bead for my girls lower torso.
[But i would advice you to just make some sort of a oval shaped bead yourself with clay.
i ended up having to sand the back flat or else her body was to round]
Made a underpants like shape and pressed both the legs in there, making the joint inprint.
Let it dry and then attached it to the bead/oval shape that is the lower rib joint base.
Drilled holes in the hip joint sockets.
And there you have a rough base for the lower torso.

7. Made the upper torso part.
Press the shoulder beads into the shoulder cap places.
Use fabric packed in plastic[tape] to keep this part hallow.
This gives a quite smooth finish on the inside of the torso.

8.put the doll together for the first time to checked if all the measurements were right.

9.Detailed the limbs and body.
Curves, muscles, fluffy tummy things and breastes x3
Rubbed it with water after it had dried, giving a smooth finish.[with premier it does <___>]
Attempted to cast the torso but the should sockets,
rib joint edges and details were lost. [even the boobies]
And sprayed her head base, and legs with spray putty.
Bought at think pink on the Rijswijk Fair.

10. Put the doll together again.
Put chopsticks in her limbs to keep them from bending and sanded the body to get a smooth looking body.
[that looks like one body]
One of her arms broke from the elastic,
so had to be remade.
Took pictures after that in case more of her parts broke ;3;

11. Sprayed the doll with spray putty.

12. Made the hands and feet.
Simply made rough shapes and the carved out the fingers and toes.
Discovered i'm not that good at nails :'D

13. Sprayed the dolls body.
But her bum fell of it's support.
And i had to sand the lower torso completely.
Sanded her on some more parts because i didn't
think the looked smooth enough.
Accidently damaged on of her shoulder ball joints >__<
[her arms hated me]
And redid them

thats when this picture was taken.

14.
Detailed some more, changed her lips,
smoothened some of the joints and made her lower legs a bit thinner.
Made her back smoother and her bum slightly smaller.
And her neck a tiny bit thinner.

Sprayed her after this..look the last pictures..
sanded her some more because the spray didn't go smooth because of the weather.
Then sprayed her again, and then she was send out to the caster.

I will try to update the concept drawings i made for her.
But the a2 one was send with her too the caster =3='

Edit:
replaced the picture with a higher saturation version.
Because dA desaturated the picture for some silly reason.
[does it more often]

Ive spotted what people seem to think is a seam line on her arm.
But...it's probably from the primer spray...
i first sprayed one side of the parts and then the other side.
And this arm part was the first in line so it probably dried along the edges before the other side was sprayed.

i'm simply horrible at putty spraying x3
But i had to te keep the surface of the soft primier clay from scratching every time i put the parts in a box.

Just wanted to ask a quick question: when you string the hands and feet do you thread the elastic through the hole in the hands and feet or do you add a small wire hook before attaching them?

Wow! This is really good

Just a few questions:
What clay did you use?
Did you have any prior sculpting experience before you started with you bjd? And how much if yes?
And I am very confused with stringing a bjd. Is it just elastic cords that you link on the inside of the bjd? Or do you have something more complicated? I sometimes see diagrams of the stringing where it is just elastic cords (or whatever) and then there are other diagrams that have this complicated get up with springs, and cords. So if you can help me on that I would be very grateful

Sorry if I asked questions that might have answers in your description. I am too tired to read it now. Sorry.
Thanks in advance

Thank you so much for explaining all of that. Do you cast it in resin and/or use a company for professional cast? If so which company or product?

Wonderful job!!!! I'm trying to make a ball-joint doll too, mainly so I can pose them for drawing (the wooden manikins are so boring!). I'm trying to make a mold, though, so I can make more (and possibly sell them hehe). Yours looks wonderful!!! You really did a spectacular job XD

Hi I have been looking around your gallery and love your dolls.

I would love to have you post about them at my forum www.thechamberofdreams.com if you are interested in joining. I have a whole section set up for hand made BJDs and it would be awesome to see your beautiful work there.

It's all airdried.
Sprayed with spray putty. That is what makes it grey.

I have been trying super sculpty.
But it's really not my thing,
the baking often shrinks the clay a bit and the the parts no longer fit...
but i'm afraid this might be caused by my crappy oven LOL ;3

My god, I cant say this enough but I LOVE her sculpt. You did an amazing job, with those beautiful lips, hips and thighs. I would buy her in a heartbeat if I could.
I really hope that all those issues lately clear up soon!

thank you,

i hope so too.
But i think for the persons pointing the fingers they wont be enough.
I doubt any would Satisfy them.

Looking at the fact the rough measurements are taken from a AI msd, doesn't really help.
But then again...
i guess those sizes will also be the same on several other dolls?
I basically did it to make sure she would fit regular msd size clothes x3
It was done with the best intentions, not to steal any sculpt or concept.

But hey,
i just hope those people can get over themselves.
Maybe try making a doll themselves and maybe then they will understand? =3='

Your doll doesnt look like other msd's, so I dont know how they could think you were copying. Making the doll have roughly the same measurements as other dolls will just make it easier for owners to dress them, its strange people would think thats a bad thing.
Maybe those people who are pointing the fingers should try making a doll themselves. The whole 'walk a mile in someone elses shoes' thing.

thanks,
well must say i slightly changed some little things.
First time big doll so ...
now i'm making my SD i'm doing a lot of things different from what i learned from my msd.

Like trying to get the insides of the limbs smooth,
because i spend quite some time smoothening my msd's inside...
a curse to do really.
[and then i bought some new add ons for my drill and i was done in like 10 minutes o'____'o *frustration*]

Wow, yeah I can imagine that would take some time! But glad you have a better drill bit now. Could have taken even longer on an SD XP
