Description This is all true, and in fact, many moths are experiencing major population crashes because of our weird belief that Leaves Are The Enemy And Must Be Annihilated. I get the HOA is a problem, believe me, but...well...moths.

(And because somebody always proudly announces that they shred leaves with their lawnmower--indeed. Lotta rapidly spinning blades there. Not a fun thing to have go through your bed. So, again, if you can wait until spring, or leave a section unshredded, the moths will thank you.)

Now I have an excuse for my laziness

When my wife tells me she wants me to rake up the leaves and mow the lawn I can be like:

"But honey, think of the poor moths"

My parents always raked up the leaves in the spring because of fire danger in the summer. Β but they were just tough little blue oak leaves, so probably not much use to passing moths. Β No burning though. Β No sense giving the fire season an early start.

dana-redde [2013-11-02 18:19:59 +0000 UTC]

Never understood why people had a problem with leaves. I'm in a concrete jungle, but at my parents' house, the leaves just sit there all winter, and no one is for the worse! I have seen these luna moths there in the past, although infrequently.
Do Home Owner's Associations actually make people rake them up? God, the suburbs blow.

Thanks! I only saw my first live luna moth earlier this summer and I was amazed to learn that they're really widespread, just terribly shy. My son took over the yard work from his brother and now I know there's a serendipitous purpose to his haphazard and sloppy methods.

also, this is an awesome annoucement!

afke11 [2013-10-29 12:52:03 +0000 UTC]

I never clean up leaves. I don't see the point. They leave a nice blanket in your yard to protect roots/plants against the cold. And it's pwetty!

Here it's not burning they do, but leaf-blowers they use; you blow them off your lawn, and then... the next day the wind blows them back?

SlavicWolf [2013-10-28 00:20:21 +0000 UTC]

I always wondered why Americans have to clear the leaves from their lawns during Autumn. I always thought that a blanket of leaves keeps the grass from freezing to death in the winter. Not to mention that it ends up turning into fertilizer. Some things I simply can't understand. Great image though.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 2

ElizaWyatt In reply to SlavicWolf [2014-02-14 20:43:34 +0000 UTC]

Where I live in the US, it doesn't freeze in the winter. If you leave those leaves, they'll turn soggy and slippery and kill the lawn.

On the other hand, neither of those moths live here, and as 'the evergreen state', we don't have many falling leaves anyway.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

SlavicWolf In reply to ElizaWyatt [2014-03-10 03:59:33 +0000 UTC]

hmm maybe the lawn..... I won't say it. Its too gray in winter to begin with.

44NTW44 In reply to SlavicWolf [2013-10-28 07:58:39 +0000 UTC]

As an American, that's what I was taught to do, but now that I know all that, especially the bit about killing moths, I won't be bothering with big black trash bags any more. I'll just sweep them off the patio.
