It's because he wished to consult the holy turnip that he is currently standing on, which will not give advice unless it's impressed by his determination. The chicken, of course, is thinking "Okaaaaaaaaaaaay...."

This my friends is how you tell the sex of an unborn chicken, by balancing a mouse underneath the egg and seeing which way it swings before landing on it's face and most likely destroying the egg.

I think we can all remember the last time we had to balance a teacup on an egg which was perched on the tip of our nose as we stood on one leg atop a large turnip! truly marvelouse stuff! hurrah for you!
