Description I have been wanting to paint a crested caracara since I saw one in Texas last year. There is something just absurdly elegant about them and their extravagant toupees.

As always, my scanner gets a little irked on the blues–some of the dark bits are not as dark as they should be–but you get the gist.

8 x 16 mixed media sealed to board. Original going to Anthrocon, and then on to my gallery show if it doesn’t sell there.

I officially love dA's similar works thing, because it led me back to your gallery years after first finding it! I remember ogling your beautiful animal saints a really long time ago, and it makes me fantastically happy to see that you've done more.

This one is really pretty, and those scribblings on the walls are fantastic xD

I still prefer the striated caracara though. Those are little bastards with wings.

Have you ever seen a Victoria Crowned Pigeon? Those crests are just surreal.

Sounds just like my scanner. I reckon, designers put in a CDD (colour-disrupting-device) or something, just to annoy us.

However, I think it looks great all the same.

I'd love to see you tackle one of New Zealand's birds, either a kakapo, takahe or the ever elegant tui.

If you have trouble getting accurate color out of your scanner you could always use Vuescan or some other program that lets you profile the scanner. It's not free, it also has a daunting learning curve, but it has lots of features geared towards color control and workflow photographers like, and it doesn't lie about it's capabilities promising the moon with a song and dance. And it works with many different scanners, including several that have long been abandoned by the manufacturer.

Also I know Epson's scan software has a mode, buried in the options, that turns off auto-exposure in favor of pre-profiled color management. Other scan drivers may have similar features; except, probably, HP. Everyone I've talked to seems to agree HP scan software is pants.

Esmakadore the Snake Kicker, or Smacky the Whacky behind his back, loved snakes, especially with communion wafers and wine. Legend had it that he single-handedly drove all the snakes out of some place, but no one was quite sure where it was. Smacky didn't know. His grasp of geography was limited to the nearest rock to whack a snake on, while the inhabitants of the somewhere-or-another were strangely silent on the matter. On the other hand, his snake-kicking habits fit in well with accepted doctrine so, when an errant hoop snake allegedly killed Smacky by accident somewhere outside of Caracas after failing to signal a left turn, he was canonized as the patron saint of snake-kickers, tarantella dancers, and political whistle-blowers.

Not as good as Ms. Vernon's stories, I'll admit, but I felt the picture was lonely for a story, even if only a fumbly excuse for one.

Beautiful! I'm sure you'll have no problem selling it. Your pieces usually go quickly (or at least I assume they do since I've never actually been to one of the conventions you go to) but that's a compliment to your skills ^^

I always imagine them as having an undercut, punkrock style...

They are one of my favourite birds though. So pleased to see you painted one of my favourite critters! <3

Lovely! And the pendant is very symbolic of something or other.

What's that in the background? "Drove snakes out of somewhere"?

Haha, thanks for pointing that out, I wouldn't have noticed it otherwise. Made me look and see there was "snake kicker" too

Oh, I didn't spot that one! (Or the "the" crammed in between "drove" and "snakes", apparently.)
