Description In later years, he was never able to explain how it happened. It had all seemed terribly logical at the time, one thing leading to another in series, and after Cairo, it was simply inevitable that he'd be scaling a cliff with a pear, a voodoo doll, and of course, the goldfish. (Always the goldfish. The goldfish was the crux of the matter, after all, even if he hadn't known it at the time.) But when he tried to explain this to other people, it began to sound increasingly crazy, until finally he gave up completely. After that, whenever anybody asked, he said he'd been in a cult, but was feeling much better now, and that seemed to satisfy everybody and didn't lead to nearly as many awkward questions.

Acrylic on cradled clayboard, 16 x 20. The photos of this one didn't come out as well as I'd like--they bleached out the whites something fierce, and the detail gets lost--but after multiple attempts, I gave it up and went with this one. It's likely no one will buy it who hasn't seen it at a show, but I'm okay with that (and the sort of person who wants this particular scene on their wall would be a rare individual anyhow!) But it IS for sale! E-mail if you're that individual!

And no, I don't know the story either. I think it's sort of a self-portrait--I don't always know what the heck I'm doing, or why I have to have these particular things with me, but it all seems to make sense at the time, and it's only afterwards that people go "No, really. How did you get THERE?" and I realize "Okay, dude, maybe putting horns on fruit is weird, but it seemed so logical while I was doing it!"

This is a really funny picture with the little donkey with his big hooves and his hood that covers his eyes, and his ears with an earring, climbing up the rock wall with a bunch of random items (that, of course, include the fish. This is pretty cool!

This is one of the very first pieces I found on dA, and I don't even remember now how or why I found it. I remember though that the description for this picture made me smile during some very rough times of my life, so much so that I printed it out and carried it with me.

I remembered it again and went searching for it, only to discover that I have faved several of your other pieces in the last few months without even realizing you were the same artist!

Thank you for the original and fatastical work you create, and the little stories you give along with them. This remains one of my very favorite images

Of course it is always about the fish. why wouldn't it be about the fish. sitting at the heart of the matter - as always the fish.

once again .. simply brilliant. and a cheerful thought to the day.

This picture is so adorable. I love his little snout and the details of the cliff. The blue haze of the mountain in the background is perfect-if you didn't get that right it would probably stand out more than the cliff and the donkey.

Heh, grabbed my eye. It is original, alright. I think this should be in surreal instead of anthro, it just looks that way to me. I wish I could paint like that at all.

ursulav In reply to lissy [2004-07-13 18:19:41 +0000 UTC]

Stupid self confidence. Seriously, I think that's the key--you just gotta throw yourself into each painting without thinking twice. Or once, if you can help it.

I can almost see the big: "???" above his head. I like the rocks, super job on the texture and colors. The fish and its bag came out awesome (I usually find transparent materials difficult to do in any medium o.0) and it's really cute. Nice job!

Sometimes when you write you remind me of Neil Gaiman. Which is really a compliment even though it's sort of sneaky to tell someone that they're like someone else instead of being like themself. But you aren't the same. It's jut the feel that I get. A very "squee"ish delight at the oddness and the improbability and the delight at it working besides that.

Random latenight comments likely make no sense. Anyway, I do love it. I can't find anything wrong with it, or else I would attempt something critique-ish. I love the goldfish. I adore the little pear. The surreal feeling is perfect.
